The Scottish Vehicle Recovery Association (SVRA) and its member companies have given their backing to veterans’ charity Erskine with a generous donation.

SVRA visited The Erskine Home in Bishopton recently to hand over a cheque for £5,000 raised through Corporate Membership subscriptions.

Erskine’s Community Fundraising manager Lesley Miller was delighted to receive the money from Alex Robb, SVRA Chairman recently.

She said: “Donations such as this from the SVRA are key to helping Erskine provide its high standard of unrivalled care at its five homes and partnership homes across Scotland. Without the kindness of our loyal supporters we would not be able to provide the care that our ex-Service men and women of all ages deserve.”

The member companies who helped to raise the donation include D.Swinley Engineering based in Kirkcaldy; Singer & Friedlander Finance in Glasgow; McDonald Black Insurance in Glasgow; Arinsdale Ltd Equipment in Grangemouth; Dingbro Parts/ Access’s in Elgin; Greenflag; Britannia Rescue; and Bollington Motor Trade.

Big Long Chippy Run

One hundred and eighty seven miles is a long way to go for a good fish supper - especially if you are swimming, cycling and running.

But according to the members of Glasgow Triathlon Club who did just that last weekend to raise money for Erskine and two other charities, the chips taste all the better for the effort.

Around 40 members of the club took part in a unique charity event called the Big Long Chippie Run Triathlon. The three-day challenge took them from the west coast of Scotland to the east coast village of Anstruther, aptly the home of Scotland’s famous Anstruther Fish Bar.

Starting at 6am on Friday (26th July), the Big Long Chippie Run Triathlon set off from Helensburgh for an eight-mile cycle to Balloch. For the next 11 hours, a relay of swimmers headed north along the spectacular 22-mile length of Loch Lomond.

After a night at Bienglas Campsite, Inverarnan, the triathletes then cycled the 96 miles from Ardlui to Kinross.

The final leg on the Sunday included 40 miles of cycling and 11 miles of running. Participants were joined by many friends and relatives for the final one mile run into Anstruther on Sunday. And there were cheers and clapping from bystanders in the popular coastal village as the Big Long Chippy Run Triathlon finally came to a finish outside the door of Scotland’s best chip shop.

It was then over to the staff at award-winning Anstruther Fish bar to fry up enough fish and chips to feed the exhausted triathletes.

Mini-bus and van support for the event was provided by Mitchells Hire Drive at Dumbarton.

Yesterday, Glasgow Triathlon Club president David Wilson said: “Some people will go a long way for a good fish supper and our club is no exception. Although this was a tough event we all had a fantastically enjoyable time. We are also delighted to have raised more than £1500 for our nominated charities.”

The club’s secretary Stewart Reid added: “When we thought up this event as part of the club’s 10th anniversary celebrations we has no idea how much fun it would be – nor how good the chips would taste at the end. This has been an incredibly special weekend and one that many people will treasure for years to come.”

Money raised from the Big Long Chippie Run Triathlon will be split equally among Erskine, Loch Lomond Rescue Boat (LLRB) and The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.

Andy On Form Again For Erskine

A long-standing supporter of Erskine has come up trumps again for his favourite charity!

Andy Cumming, from Paisley, has raised thousands of pounds, over a number of years for the veterans’ charity trying something different every time.

Last year he organised a five-a-side football tournament and this year a raffle, which included a football shirt signed by the current Rangers team raised £600.

Andy managed to increase his fundraising efforts after his employers Royal Bank of Scotland gave a further £500 through its Community Cash Back Scheme, which recognises their employee’s charitable commitments and helps to support the charities they are involved with.

Well done Andy and his RBS employers!

Erskine Glasgow's Marathon Success

A team of care staff who provide first-class care to Glasgow’s war veterans have raised £1,831 after completing the Edinburgh Marathon.

The runners from the Erskine Glasgow Home in Anniesland, which opened in February 2008, raised the cash after running as the Erskine Glasgow Snails relay team on May 31st.

Care assistant Mark Ewing, from Dumbarton, Senior Care Assistant Judith McLay, from Kirkintilloch; Senior Care Assistant John Barrett, from Drumchapel, and Ally Johnston, 17, from Rothesay set out to raise £1,000 for the home by pounding the streets of Scotland’s capital.

But they were overjoyed to raise nearly double their initial target by running the Hairy Haggis Team Relay.

Gordon Johnston, Erskine Glasgow Home manager, said: "Given that it was one of the hottest days of the year, and that there was a lack of available water at some stages of the course, the team did remarkably well to complete the marathon without any mishaps; the only ailments being sore legs and sunburn! Everyone at Erskine Glasgow is really proud of Judith, John, Ally and Mark. We hope to make this an annual event!"

The Bridge of Don Academy has been putting their fundraising hats on again for Erskine.

The 5th and 6th year pupils managed to raise £744.45 for the veterans’ charity by holding a Heroes and Villains themed dress down day and a quiz.

Recently Erskine Area Co-ordinator North, Catherine Cowie, visited the school to receive the cheque from pupils.

She said: “This is a fantastic donation from the Bridge of Don Academy, it is wonderful that they have chosen Erskine as the charity to benefit from their fundraising activities yet again. Donations such as this allow Erskine to continue to provide unrivalled medical and nursing care to veterans of all ages across Scotland. Their efforts are extremely welcomed.”

Supporters Turn Out For Royal Scots Lunch

Around 90 friends of Erskine turned out to support the veterans’ charity Edinburgh Appeal at its recent Royal Scots Club lunch.

The lunches, which are held three times a year, are organised by Jacobina and Ernie Woodburn who are staunch supporters of Erskine.

Guest of honour for the occasion on June 9th was Major General Euan Loudon CBE, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

As part of the lunch Major General Loudon gifted a VIP invitation for two to his box at the Military Tattoo as part of our raffle.

The event was a huge success for the Erskine Edinburgh Home, Gilmerton, raising £809 towards its 48-bed expansion which is due to open in early autumn.

John Fyfe, Erskine’s Edinburgh fundraiser, said: “It is encouraging to see so many supporters of Erskine turn out to raise much needed funds for our Edinburgh home. These lunches form an important part of raising awareness of the care Erskine provides for veterans in Edinburgh and the East of Scotland area. Many thanks must be given to Major General Loudon CBE for attending and for his very poignant speech which was very well delivered and set the tone for the whole event.”

Chris Moon walks the talk. He's survived kidnap, threatened execution, being blown up, losing his limbs and most of his blood.

He ran a marathon less than a year after leaving hospital, tested artificial limbs to new limits, run most of the world's toughest ultra distance races, climbed mountains, crossed countries on foot, written books and most importantly used his experience to understand and illustrate the process of achievement.

On 20/21 June 2009, Chris will challenge himself to run the West Highland Way, aiming to cross 96 miles of rough and uneven terrain in under 30 hours.

Chris has decided to use his run to support Erskine, the Scottish charity which cares for ex-Service men and women.

We hope – with the help of you and all our other supporters – to be able to do even more this year.

NB65 Cycle Challenge

Thursday 4th June saw a group of cyclists, Faslane submariners and civilians, departing from The Erskine Home, Bishopton, one of the five Erskine homes caring for Scottish veterans of all ages.

The cyclists were departing for Normandy where they were to be joined by members of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards to begin an arduous cycle journey, commencing at 7.25 am on 6th June, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day.
Many of the veterans who were present along with families, friends and staff, to hear Colonel Martin Gibson, CEO of Erskine lead the resounding send off to the cyclists had personally experienced the D Day landings.

With a piper playing heart stirring music and the flag being dropped by Chris Moon, a man regarded as a hero of present times, the send off was not only fitting to the men taking on this difficult challenge but also very poignant.
The cyclists’ journey will end at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, after a journey of almost 800 miles.

The venture, as well as commemorating the 65th anniversary of D-Day and the liberation of Western Europe, is an attempt to raise £65,000 for three specially chosen charities.

The first of these charities, Erskine and Combat Stress, represent not only the service but sacrifice of servicemen and women past and present and the third, CCLASP, represents today’s younger generation.

The cycling fund raisers are hoping that the public will support them and these three important charities by sponsoring them at www.NB65.co.uk.

Colonel Martin Gibson said: "Our D Day veterans can never be repaid for the sacrifices made and courage shown on that historical day in June 65 years ago. We, at Erskine, commend this stalwart group of cyclists in their bid to honour and recognise this momentous day and wish them very best of luck on their long journey."

Forth Coxswain Is Full Steam Ahead For Erskine Edinburgh Home

A coxswain for the Forth Pilots Association swapped his pilot boat for hiking boots recently to raise money for the Erskine Edinburgh Home.

Tom Smith, from Loanhead, trekked 45 miles from Tyndrum to Fort William last month in a bid to raise awareness and money for the veterans’ charity’s home in Gilmerton.

Tom, who previously served with the Sea Company 15 Para, took four days to complete his challenge after battling torrential rain and wind.

But his efforts paid off when he recently handed over a cheque for £860 towards the Erskine Edinburgh Home expansion which is due to open in late summer. The money was made up of sponsorship from friends, family, colleagues and employers the Forth Pilots Association, based in Granton.

Tom said: "I was going to be doing the walk anyway but because I enjoyed it when I completed it last time I thought why not make some money for charity out of it. I also live in Loanhead and the Erskine Edinburgh Home is just around the corner. With that and my son having served with the Royal Scots, the Erskine Edinburgh Home expansion was the perfect choice to raise money for."

John Fyfe, Edinburgh Fundraiser, said: "I think it is a marvellous example of someone who, not only fundraising for their own personal reasons, but involving their colleagues and their employer to greatly increase the amount raised in support of a fantastic cause which helps veterans of all ages across Scotland, including ex-Service men and women from Edinburgh and the Lothians."

Walking the West Highland Way, Scotland's first official long distance route linking Milngavie to Fort William covering the 95 miles, was the brothers' choice of fund raising event for Erskine.

Having braved the elements of the mercurial April weather, the dense woodland, and great big hills, not to mention to dreaded midge they were delighted to find that people dug deep into their pockets and sponsored them very generously, so far to the tune of £1,300.

Grant and Tam, both veterans themselves, know how important the care Erskine provides is.

Grant said "It was and is always a privilege and honour to do something that will benefit Erskine. As long as there is war in this world there will always be a need for Erskine".

No matter how big or small your chosen event is every penny makes a difference to the quality of life for over 1,370 veterans cared for by Erskine each year. So please help make a difference.

Our Erskine Bridge Walk on Monday 1st June might not be as arduous as the West Highland Way, at just over 2 miles there and back, but already we have local schools and many individual walkers registered for what we hope will be a fun packed day.

Bannockburn High School in Stirling has presented Erskine with its third donation in a year.

Erskine fundraiser David Hamilton received £250 from Nadine Fowler and the school's Charity Committee.

The money was raised as part of the school's fundraising activities over the last year such as a non-uniform day, showing of a Simpson's movie, and an old fashion sports day between staff and pupils - which the pupils won!

David Hamilton said: "This is the third donation over the past year from pupils of Bannockburn High School and their continued support is really appreciated by all the staff and residents at Erskine. It was especially nice to receive the cheque from the whole committee as this will be their last get together before their end of school exams. We wish them all every success for the future!"

A squadron of Officer Cadets (Ocdts) are hoping to propel themselves to success at this year's Edinburgh Marathon in aid of the veterans' charity Erskine.

They hope to raise around £3,000 for Erskine, which runs five care homes for ex-Service men and women across Scotland.

David Hamilton, Erskine Fundraiser, was delighted to receive nearly £1,400 from the branch who have long supported Erskine'

Branch members raised £600 by holding a Hogmanay Party. Member couple Anne and Kenny Henderson handed over £710 after they forego presents for their Golden Wedding Anniversary in lieu of donations to Erskine. They raised the money by holding a celebration for family and friends in the Roslin club.

David Hamilton, Erskine Fundraiser, said: "It was a pleasure for me to receive these cheques from the Roslin Branch of the RBLS who are strong supporters of Erskine. It was especially pleasing to meet and thank in person Anne and Kenny Henderson for their gracious gesture in foregoing their Golden Wedding Anniversary presents to make a donation to Erskine. Such generosity from Anne and Kenny, their family and friends, is really appreciated by all of our veterans."

A quiz night, organised by the Soroptimist International of Hamilton, has helped to raise £1,500 for Erskine.

The event lead by President Betty Glancey at Carrington's Restaurant in Hamilton on March 30th was held as part of the branch's 60th anniversary year.

David Hamilton, Erskine fundraiser, said: "Soroptimist International, formed in 1923, is an organisation whose aim is to promote the cause of women throughout the world. It is fitting therefore that Soroptimist International of Hamilton decided to support Erskine which cares for ex-Service women who have served their country and continue to serve in current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As part of their own 60th Anniversary Year the ladies of Soroptimist International of Hamilton organised a very successful Quiz Night which raised a fantastic total of £1500 for Erskine. All of the residents of Erskine, but especially the 48 ladies in our care, are extremely grateful to President Betty Glancey and her volunteers for this wonderful effort on their behalf."

Army Officer Cadets Gunning For Edinburgh Marathon Sucess In Aid Of Veterans

A troop of Army Officer Cadets (OCdts) are hoping to fire themselves to success at this year's Edinburgh marathon in aid of the veterans' charity Erskine.

Eight OCdts from the Royal Regiment of Artillery Gun Troop at the City of Edinburgh Universities Officers' Training Corps (CEUOTC) will pound 26.2 miles through Scotland’s capital during the event on May 31st, covering a total of 131 miles.

Four team members OCdt Jenny Findlay, Junior Under Officer Simon Antoun, OCdt Susan Lyall and OCdt Alistair Guzowski, are to run individually while OCdts Michael Tough, Liam Dunnet, James Cooksey, and Bruce Holborn, will make up the Erskine Gunners relay team, taking on a leg of the marathon each.

The group, made up of students from the universities of Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh, hope they are able to raise a record-breaking amount of cash through their Erskine challenge. Team Captain OCdt Jenny Findlay said: "We were going to run the marathon anyway and we were thinking it would be a good idea to run for a worthwhile charity. Since Erskine has a home in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, and also the CEUOTC is based here, it made sense to raise money for them as it is a cause we strongly support."

2009 is the highest number of entrants for Erskine in the Edinburgh Marathon with 27 entries made up of individual and relay teams taking part.

Welcome Donation From RAF Leuchars

Erskine received a welcome donation of £3,000 from the RAF Leuchars Station Charities Action Group (SCAG) - an organisation on the RAF base which carries out activities throughout the year to support local and national charities.

The SCAG is made up of volunteers who give of their spare time to organise and participate in events to generate funds. In total the group raises, on average, £12,000 for charities each year.

The biggest event of the year is a car raffle with the ticket being drawn at the Battle of Britain Air Show held at RAF Leuchars each September.

David Hamilton, Erskine fundraiser, said: "The RAF Leuchars SCAG are tremendous supporters of Erskine who give freely of their spare time to raise money to support the work that we do to care for veterans of all ages. Last year the SCAG raised over £12,000 for local and national charities and we are very grateful to receive £3,000 of this total. As an ex-member of the RAF myself, who spent many years based at Leuchars, it is particularly pleasing to see serving airmen and airwomen give up their spare time and work so enthusiastically to raise money for Erskine. We are also delighted that the RAF Leuchars SCAG will continue to support Erskine in 2009 and look forward to working with them at various events during the year."

SMT Claymores Welcome Donation

The Erskine Edinburgh Home has received a welcome donation of £2,500 from loyal supporters, the SMT Claymore Club.

During 2008, along with its sister organisation the Yorkshire Traction Company, it raised the fantastic total by holding competition at home and away.

The SMT Claymores have been staunch supporters of Erskine since 2004 and has already raised more than £400 as part of their efforts for 2009.

David Hamilton, Edinburgh Fundraiser, received the cheque at the club’s annual dinner/dance on Friday 20th March .

David said: "The SMT Claymore Club, which has been going strong for over 60 years, is made up of past and current employees from bus companies in Edinburgh and Lothian region. Their tremendous efforts on behalf of Erskine reflect their willingness and determination to raise funds to help others whilst at the same time enjoying themselves at various events from darts to golf matches. It was a pleasure to attend the club’s annual dinner and to meet so many enthusiastic supporters of Erskine, some of which are themselves veterans. One of these veterans was Charlie Hamilton who saw action in France in 1939/40, was evacuated from Dunkirk, then saw action again in the Sudan and North Africa before being taken prisoner and held in Italy and Germany. Charlie, who is a very sprightly 88, was wounded twice but thinks himself lucky to have survived. Such support from a veteran such as Charlie is fantastic."

Edinburgh Spring Concert On Song For Veterans

A special seasonal concert, in aid of the Erskine Edinburgh Home, has raised £762.

The Edinburgh Spring Concert raised the fantastic total after 150 guests, friends, and veterans gathered at the Parish of St Cuthbert's Church, Lothian Road, on Saturday March 21st.

The Cadenza Choir put on a special programme which included performances of classical songs by Mendelssohn, an arrangement of Billy Joel's 'And So It Goes' and a piece by Scottish composer Ken Johnston.

All money raised from the event will go towards a new specialist expansion, currently being built at the Gilmerton home and is due to open later this year.

David Hamilton, Erskine's Edinburgh fundraiser, said: "We are very grateful to The Cadenza Choir, under Musical Director Jenny Sumerling, for their generosity in giving this performance for the benefit of the veterans at the Erskine Edinburgh Home. The concert was thoroughly enjoyed by an audience of over 150 and raised £762 towards the expansion of the Edinburgh Home. When completed by the end of July the expansion will provide specialist care for an additional 48 veterans of all ages. Concerts like this are a wonderful way to support the work of Erskine as they provide such excellent entertainment to both our residents and a wider audience."

Gartcosh Ceilidh Raises £1,600 For War Veterans

A traditional ceilidh evening has raised £1,600 towards veterans’ charity Erskine. The event was organised by the Eirich Ceilidh Band - made up of David Hunt, Alan Brown and Michael Sheridan - and held at Gartcosh Works Social Club in February.

David, who plays the accordion in the band, has strong connections with the military as his grandfather served as a Seaforth Highlander. He was also inspired by a leader during his time in the Army Cadet Force who received medals for bravery after saving the life of a colleague.

The band, from Glenboig and Coatbridge, decided to use their first ever fundraising event to help Erskine continue its care for those who put their lives on the line for their country. More than 300 people turned up to support the cause and see performances by the Cumbernauld Gaelic Choir and John Hunt who played the bagpipes.

David said: "It was a really good night and people responded really well to the music and the cause. The Cumbernauld Gaelic Choir was amazing, absolutely brilliant, and a lot of the folk on the night got behind our fundraising efforts."

Donald, a former Sergeant with the King's Own Scottish Borderers, said he wouldn't have been able to go the extra mile without the support he had along the way.

He said: "I would like to thank everyone who sponsored and encouraged me throughout the 53 miler."

"Special thanks to Mark (Compo) Rankin an ex Royal Scot who also ran the whole way and the guys who joined us running and cycling between stations keeping us company."

"My wife Janine who met us at each station with the boot of the car open full of drinks and goodies."

"Thanks to the weather for being kind to us and to family and friends who cheered us on and came to the finish to help us celebrate."

"It was also an honour for me that two veterans; Ian Grieve, RS, aged 89, and Leslie Barr, Durham HL, aged 85; came to the finish along with Erskine fundraiser David Hamilton."

"The pain and effort worth it - it was a perfect day."

Former Royal Scot Mark (Compo) Rankin also completed the run, setting the pace for his friend and raising £1,000 for Herdman Flat Hospital, in Haddington, East Lothian.

David Hamilton, Erskine's Edinburgh fundraiser, said: "Such an effort from Donald, running the equivalent of a double marathon in under 10 hours, is a tremendous effort. All the staff and veterans at Erskine Edinburgh thank Donald, and Mark for acting as pacemaker, for their great determination in helping to raise funds towards the construction of the expansion at Gilmerton.!

Erskine's Chief Executive, Colonel Martin Gibson, said: "To run for nearly 10 hours shows great determination. It comes as no surprise to learn that Donald is a veteran himself and the money he raises will go towards the expansion of our Edinburgh Home. It is fitting that as young men and women are bravely putting their lives on the line for their country, Donald is going more than the extra mile to ensure they get the best possible care when they need it."

Erskine Benefits From Agency Fundraising Week

Service, Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) based at Kentigern House in Glasgow, had a fundraising week last month which has raised £525 for Erskine.

Staff members held a raffle giving one lucky employee in with the chance of winning a day off work if they collected the first prize.

There was also a chance to snap up some home baking, take part in a quiz and many more fun things.

Susan O'Neill, Erskine's Glasgow fundraiser, met with staff recently to collect their much-welcomed donation. She said: "SPVA had a remarkable fundraising week and I'm delighted that they thought of Erskine to benefit from the proceeds. One worker made a home baking stand and had steam coming from her hands as she had to bake every night to keep up with the demand. I'd like to thank all involved in making this a wonderful fundraising week as every donation is worthwhile in helping Erskine provide first-class care to ex-Service men and women across Scotland."

Blazing Effort From Fire Service College

A squad of fire fighters have gone above and beyond the call of duty by climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest (29,096ft) during a charity ladder climb.

Each year three Fire Officer courses are run at the Scottish Fire Services College in Gullane, East Lothian, for new entry fire men and women who will go on to serve in units throughout Scotland.

Each course holds a charity ladder climb with 10 members of each Squad climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest for the charity of its choice.

On the last course, Foxtrot Squad nominated Erskine, which runs five care homes across Scotland, as its chosen charity and raised the sum of £479.25.

The team behind the fantastic effort were Barry Puncher, Sarah Simpson, Andrew Sinclair, David Mills, Gordon Scott, Dave Lang, Craig Martin, Raymond Mclaughlin, Craig Donnelly and Stevie Craig.

David Hamilton, Edinburgh fundraiser, said: "It was an honour and pleasure to attend the charity evening at the Scottish Fire Services College, to meet the members of Foxtrot Squad, and to receive a cheque for £479.25 which they raised for Erskine from their Charity Ladder Climb."

"To climb the equivalent of Mount Everest in aid of Erskine speaks volumes for the character of the young men and women of the Fire Service especially as they will be putting their life on the line in the service of others, just as our veterans in Erskine have done."

Supporters Gather For Erskine Edinburgh Lunch

More than 90 friends of Erskine attended a lunch on Tuesday 10th February in the beautiful Hepburn Suite at the Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh in honour of the veterans' charity.

The lunches, which are held three times a year in support of the Edinburgh Appeal, are organised by Jacobina and Ernie Woodburn who are staunch supporters of the veterans' charity.

The guest of honour for the afternoon was the Rt Hon George Grubb, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who recalled his service in both the Army as a national Service man and the RAF as a padre in a speech to guests.

The Lord Provost also emphasised the continuing need for the care which Erskine provides and looked forward to the opening of the expansion to the Erskine Edinburgh Home, Gilmerton, later this year.

This new four-wing building will provide much needed additional facilities to meet the needs of veterans in the Edinburgh and east of Scotland. Shona Sinclair, the Director of Development for Erskine also updated supporters on the progress of the building work.

The lunch raised over £1,000 towards the Edinburgh Appeal.

David Hamilton, Edinburgh Fundraiser, said: "Apart from raising much needed funds the lunches form an important part of raising awareness of the care which Erskine provides for veterans in the Edinburgh and east of Scotland area. I believe that it is important that the good people of Edinburgh and the east look upon Erskine as a local charity deserving of their support."

The next lunch will be held on Wednesday 10th June, more details will follow soon.

Policeman Runs His Beat For The Erskine Edinburgh Home

A police officer is to run a double marathon in just over 10 hours to raise funds for the Erskine Edinburgh Home, in Gilmerton.

PC Donald Kettrick, who served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers for 11 years, will run to every police station in his E Division beat to raise money towards the veterans charity's new £6million expansion that is currently being built.

His 53 mile run, beginning at 4am on Saturday 7th March, will take him to 12 police stations starting at Dunbar and finishing at Penicuik.

Donald, 41, from Gorebridge, hopes to raise £2,000 through his fundraising effort to help Erskine continue to deliver more unrivalled nursing and medical care at its home in Gilmerton Road, Edinburgh.

He said: "I've run 45 miles before, but it's an extra eight miles this time. Hopefully it will take between 10 and 11 hours. I see it in the news all the time about people getting hurt in Iraq and Afghanistan and there are more than you think about. Erskine Edinburgh does not just help older veterans, but young guys too and I thought it would be great charity to run for."

David Hamilton, Edinburgh fundraiser, said: "Such an effort from Donald, running the equivalent of a double marathon, is a tremendous effort which deserves the greatest possible support. As an ex-Kings Own Scottish Borderer, Donald knows how important the specialist care Erskine provides is to ex-service men and women who have served their country in past and present operations. The money raised by Donald's efforts will go towards the construction of the expansion to the Erskine Edinburgh Home on Gilmerton Road. Please support Donald in this magnificent fundraising effort."

Erskine's Chief Executive Colonel Martin Gibson said "To run for over 11 hours shows great determination. It comes as no surprise to learn that Donald is a veteran himself and the money he raises will go towards the expansion of our Edinburgh Home.
Speyside Air Cadets Shoe Box Appeal For Erskine Patients

Goodie boxes were put together by air cadets from Speyside to help brighten the day of former members of the Armed Forces.

The cadets donated toiletries, confectionary and books to make up the parcels which they presented to Area Co-ordinator of the Erskine charity, Catherine Cowie.

The gifts will be presented to 2 ladies and 2 gentlemen who are resident at one of the charity's homes.

Flying Officer Sarah Birkett enthused: "It was great to hear about Erskine and the people who live there. It was a real eye opener. Initially, the intention was to give the shoe boxes to members of the Armed Forces currently serving overseas but they were swamped with donations and we had to have a re-think. We all agreed, Erskine was an ideal cause. We hope the residents enjoy the contents of the boxes".

Five charities including Erskine shared a total of £5000 raised by RAF Kinloss from the Family and Friends Day in September 08.

Erskine, received £1000 along with the Forres Osprey Trust; Autism in Moray; the Findhorn, Kinloss and Forres Branch of the RNLI and the Maggie's Highlands (Cancer Support) in Inverness. All were all nominated by Station personnel.

Over 2000 people attended family day in September where the main aim was to give Station personnel and their families a fun day out as well as a chance to see what their husbands/wives do.

The Station Commander, Group Captain Robbie Noel said: "After a particularly tough 2 years for the Station my main wish with Family Day last year was to ensure that the maximum number of Station personnel were free to enjoy the day with their children and therefore it is a great bonus to see such a large sum raised for some really great causes".

The home received a Teddy Bear Tank Cake which was the centrepiece attraction at a Help for Heroes Ball, held in Kirkcaldy.

The beautifully decorated creation was handed into staff by Caroline Stewart after the event last week.

Erskine is set to work in partnership with Help For Heroes (H4H) and the Ministry of Defence to deliver the Army Recovery Centre pilot scheme at the Gilmerton home. A 12-bed dedicated wing will open in August which will house wounded and injured troops returning from current conflict.

Lynn Suttie, Erskine Edinburgh Home manager, said: “It was a privilege to receive such a kind and tasty donation, which our residents very much enjoyed. It was certainly the talking point of the home last week!”

Erskine Veterans Honour Armed Forces Day

Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson met with men and women from Erskine this week to hear their personal stories ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June.

Provost Lawson paid a visit to The Erskine Home in Bishopton, to meet some of the residents who will be attending a special flag-raising ceremony in Paisley on Monday 22nd June and a service in Paisley Abbey on Armed Forces Day.

She said: “Erskine is a fantastic charity which provides vital support and care for veterans of all ages. It is always a pleasure to visit and speak to some of the fascinating characters who live out there. I am delighted that some of the residents will be attending these two events being held in Renfrewshire to honour Armed Forces Day.”

A specially-commissioned Armed Forces flag will be raised outside Renfrewshire Council’s headquarters on Monday to coincide with similar events across the UK and will fly for seven days.

Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson will also be joined by members of the British Legion and representatives of local armed forces for the flag-raising ceremony. The flag will fly for seven days.

During that time, up to 500 people are expected to turn out for a joint service led by Renfrewshire Council in partnership with East Renfrewshire Council and Inverclyde Council will be held in Paisley Abbey on Armed Forces Day.

Prior to the ceremony the British Legion will parade outside Paisley Town Hall before joining a procession into the Abbey.

Major Jim Panton, Erskine’s Chief Executive said: “I have only just arrived at Erskine and to see such a high level of support from Provost Lawson really gives me encouragement. All of the veterans within our care Homes are looking forward to this national day of recognition for the contribution they have made to our country”.

5th Scots Visit The Erskine Home

Recently The Erskine Home in Bishopton welcomed over a dozen young men from The Argyll Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, better known, as 5 SCOTS. The purpose of their visit was to acquaint themselves with all aspects of the charity’s work, caring for veterans of all ages throughout Scotland, and to help out with some tasks.

Recreation was lucky enough to have the young soldiers helping out and spending time with veterans. A poignant afternoon was spent, old and young blood, chatting, stories being told, swapping tales of military service and watching Erskine videos and DVDs about its beginnings and progress throughout the past 93 years.

Recreation assistant Jack Watson said: "Our veterans really enjoyed the lads’ company, they had a marvellous afternoon. There was lots of laughter and I am sure some thought provoking stories were exchanged. We are also looking forward to using the uniforms the lads brought us for our theme days".

Major Drummond said: "We have enjoyed of time spent at Erskine very much and hopefully the veterans enjoyed our visit too. Our time was limited to just two afternoons but hopefully everyone benefited from the time spent together".

Royal Marines Reserve Scotland Visit Erskine Glasgow Home

The Royal Marine Reserves, based in Govan, are no strangers to fundraising for Erskine. So when Kelly Jenkins, RM, visited the Home recently and asked if there was anything The Reserves could do for the veterans the answer was a resounding Yes.

The veterans living at the Erskine Glasgow Home were very keen to start a vegetable plot but until Kelly made her kind offer they had been short of volunteers to start them off with the basic digging. Kelly, true to her word, duly arrived with back up in the shape of Brian Jones, RMRT, Tom Burke, RMR, Jim Reilly RMRS, and Alistair Donaldson, RS and made short work of creating a wonderful vegetable plot at the rear of the car park.

Erskine Glasgow are now looking forward to harvesting a crop of carrots, onions, spring onions, broccoli, sprouts, peas, beetroot, lettuce, cabbage, chilies. Resident John Burrett, RAF, waters the plot faithfully every day and with the help of other veterans and staff is keeping the plot tidy and clear of weeds.

Erskine Glasgow Home Manager Gordon Johnston said: "Kelly and her colleagues have made a great job of creating the vegetable plot and hopefully if the foxes stay away we will have a good crop of vegetables. The residents are getting so much pleasure from their "gardening" it is wonderful to see, so a big thank you to Kelly, Brian, Tom, Jim and Alistair".

Another Success For Erskine Mains

When the time comes around for the Erskine Mains traditional Garden party, veterans, their families, friends and staff all ignore the weather forecast! No matter what the weather brings the Garden Party is always a fantastic success. This year was no different – weather or success wise with a final total of £2003.98 being raised for Erskine.

The day kicked off with hot dogs and burgers and went on to host an afternoon filled with fun, fun and more fun. With face painting, throwing the sponge, books, baking and a bouncy castle, teddies, a chocolate stall and a wonderful line dancing display from the Kansas Raiders there was something for everyone young and old.

The rain made its usual appearance, but according to the Erskine Mains Home Manager Elsie McLennan it did nothing to dampen everyone’s spirits, she said: "The day was fantastic and was thoroughly enjoyed by all our residents and their families, the staff had a ball too. We were delighted that our fundraising efforts resulted in such a brilliant amount and we would like to thank everyone who made generous donations before the Garden Party and for the cash donations on the day".

Not content with organising one big event in the month of June, the Erskine Mains staff are taking, not one, but two stalls at the Bishopton Gala Day on Saturday 20th June. They hope to welcome more of the many of friends of Erskine and continue their successful fundraising run.

Landmark Day For Injured Troops As Recovery Centre Deal Is Sealed

A momentous day has been reached for veterans’ charity Erskine, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and charity Help for Heroes (H4H) after they signed a landmark deal to look after wounded troops returning from conflict.

The three organisations came together to seal the contract for the pilot Recovery Centre which aims to meet an identified gap in the care of Soldiers wounded and injured both on operations and in training.

The unit will be operational in a dedicated 12-bed wing at the Erskine Edinburgh Home, Gilmerton, from August.

The intention is that once proven, further HRC’s will be provided throughout the UK (likely to be sited at seven super-garrison sites of Catterick, Tidworth/Bulford, Aldershot, Colchester, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland and Germany).

Colonel Martin Gibson, Erskine’s Chief Executive, said: "Today was a very significant step in realising the mission to care for injured service men and women in Scotland. Erskine looks forward with pride to working in partnership with both the MoD and H4H. Ninety-three years ago Erskine rose to the challenge to look after wounded service men and women coming back from conflict and once again we are responding."

Bryn Parry, Chief Executive of Help for Heroes, said: "I am delighted to sign the document that links Erskine, H4H and the MoD together in this project, to create the first Hero Recovery Centre. I look forward to the opening in August and I hope this will be the first Recovery House to enable our young service men and women to launch forward into the rest of their successful life."

Colonel Peter Longmore, from the Army, said: "We’ve taken a significant step today, building on the initial momentum to deliver something really special for service men and women recovering from their injuries. The centre will be very impressive and we have enjoyed working with two very professional charities – H4H and Erskine – to make it happen."

RAF Leuchars continued its unwavering support for Erskine by presenting yet another donation to the veterans' charity.

Erskine fundraiser David Hamilton was delighted to receive a cheque for £1161.62 from Station Commander, Air Commodore RJ Atkinson, on behalf of the Officers' Mess.

This latest contribution takes donations by RAF Leuchars to Erskine to over £10,000 in the past year.

David Hamilton said: "This cheque from the Officer's Mess is a tremendous effort which on top of the other donations from individuals at RAF Leuchars brings the total they have donated to Erskine to over £10,000 during the past year. All the veterans in our care really appreciate such support from serving RAF personnel. Having served three tours of duty at RAF Leuchars, it was a poignant moment for me to receive this cheque from the Station Commander in front of a Tornado which was the last aircraft type I flew in the RAF. Especially so as this will be the last cheque I will receive on behalf of Erskine as I hand over my duties to John Fyfe."

Erskine supporters have the chance to bid for a stunning framed artwork produced by professional photographer Kenny Drew.

As part of Erskine Week the two 'Scottish Storm' pieces have been donated to help raise vital funds for Erskine, which runs five care homes across Scotland.

But you better be quick, you only have until June 10th to snap up these truly iconic images.

Kenny said: "Theses two images are part of a series in which I was trying to capture specific moments rather than just iconic Scottish landscapes. They are intended to capture the deeper emotions evoked by the ever changing nature of Scotland's weather. This focus on "the moment" could explain why I have only created these two images in four years."

Lesley Miller, Community Fundraising manager, added: "It's so generous of Kenny to use his talents on Erskine's behalf. The person who puts in the winning bid for these works will not only become the proud owner of a stunning piece of photography - they'll also have the satisfaction of knowing that they've helped make life better for Scotland's veterans."

The Erskine Edinburgh Home welcomed Mike Dickinson from fellow veterans’ charity Help for Heroes for an extensive tour of its new expansion recently.

The visit took place following the announcement that the Ministry of Defence, Erskine and Help for Heroes will work together to help meet an identified gap in the care of Soldiers wounded and injured both in operations and in training. Although final contracts have yet to be signed, the three organisations are set to work in partnership to provide at pilot scheme at the Erskine Edinburgh Home, Gilmerton, called Pathfinder. This will be operational in 2009 in a dedicated 12 bed wing which will be housed in the new expansion currently being built at the Erskine Edinburgh Home.

Erskine’s Edinburgh fundraiser, David Hamilton, took Mike on an extensive tour of the site of where the Pathfinder facility will be based and also of the current Edinburgh home which currently provides nursing and medical care to 40 residents.

Mike Dickinson, Help for Heroes’ Perthshire Co-ordinator, was thrilled by what he saw. He said: “I was very impressed by the superb facilities, lots of personal care, and friendly and helpful staff. I’m looking forward to the completion of the new wing.”

David Hamilton added: “This partnership with Help for Heroes and the MoD is an exciting development for Erskine. We are looking forward to playing our part in the trial which will allow those serving soldiers injured or wounded in current operations to be treated closer to their homes and units which will be an important factor in aiding their rehabilitation.”

Erskine Edinburgh Resident To Become Lifelong Royal Signals Member

Cherished Erskine Edinburgh veteran Archibald Brown, RS, aged 94, is set to become a lifelong member of the city's branch of the Royal Signals Association.

Known as Archie at the Gilmerton home, the honour comes almost 60 years after he served as General Montgomery's personal messenger during the Second World War.

As a young signaller, Archie Brown, RS, served through the battles of El Alamein, Malta and Monte Cassino, and bravely put his life on the line each day to ensure that regiments received instructions from their commanding officer.

Since then Archie has never forgotten his Royal Signals roots and proudly wears his service medals at every opportunity.

At the age of 94, he is the oldest member of the Edinburgh Branch of the Royal Signals Association, which reformed six years ago after disbanding in the 1970s.

This month President Ian Green and Standard bearer Norrie Bishop brought one of the association's most treasured possessions for Archie to see and proudly hold – its standard.

Aged at more than 50 years old, the standard can only be handled by gloves.

Archie was also presented with a cap badge for his beret to his affiliation to the Royal Signals.

Archie said: "The flag has been displayed in the Erskine Edinburgh Home and that's very important to me. It goes back quite a while and I am glad the association brought it to my attention. President Ian Green and Standard Bearer Norrie Bishop were the first people to approach me and ask me if I would like to join the Royal Signals Association in Edinburgh. I dedicated my life to Monty and the Royal Signals and bringing the flag to the Erskine Edinburgh Home is the finale for me."

The RSA has now applied to the Royal Signals HQ based at Blandford Barracks to make Archie's membership official. This is expected to be approved in the coming weeks.

Platinum Wedding at Erskine Veterans Home

An Erskine veteran has celebrated his 70th Anniversary with his wife as they received a message from the Queen. John and Peggy Bryson were married before World War II, after John came back from serving in India with the Highland Light Infantry.

John now aged 95, joined the Army aged 16 and served all over the world and fought for his country throughout the Second World War. He joined the Parachute Regiment after serving with the HLI. John was awarded the Military Medal for his actions during fighting in Greece. He now lives in the Erskine Park Home for veterans.

Peggy, aged 91 said "We are still very much in love; even more so now, having been together for such a long time. This is now the third congratulatory message we have had from the Queen. Most people nowadays are lucky to get one." And continued "I must thank all of the Care staff at Erskine for all of the wonderful work they do - as long as they keep it up I can now start planning our 80th."

The message was presented to the couple in the Erskine Veterans Home by the charity's Chief Executive, Colonel Martin Gibson in his Deputy Lord Lieutenants role. He said "Every day at Erskine is really special as we endeavour to provide a real quality of life for the nation's veterans, but today has been really special as we celebrated this wonderful occasion with family, friends and our staff. Instead of receiving presents from their friends and family they have asked for donations to go to our charity."

New Army Convalescence Scheme To Be Piloted In Scotland At Erskine Edinburgh Home

Over the last three months there has been extensive planning between the Ministry of Defence, the veterans charities Erskine and Help for Heroes on the best way to work together to meet an identified gap in the care of Soldiers wounded and injured both on operations and in training.

Although the final contracts have yet to be signed, Erskine is going to work in partnership with the other organisations to provide a pilot scheme in the Erskine Edinburgh Home. The scheme called Pathfinder will be operational in August 2009 in a dedicated 12 bed wing in the Erskine Edinburgh Home.

Help for Heroes with Erskine will work together with MoD to provide this Pathfinder facility with the intention that once proven, further ACC's will be provided throughout the UK (likely to be sited at seven super-garrison sites of Catterick, Tidworth/Bulford, Aldershot, Colchester, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland and Germany).

Currently, once military patients leave hospital or the military's rehabilitation centre at Headley Court they continue to convalesce either at their parent unit or on sick leave at home.

However, some units and families simply cannot provide the appropriate level of support, supervision and assistance that the patient needs.

ACC's will provide a "half-way house" where patients can continue to convalesce within a caring, home-like environment suited to their particular needs that will facilitate the swiftest possible return to duty or smoothes transition to an appropriately skilled and supported civilian life.

They will offer military personnel a residential base, ideally close to their parent unit, where they can convalesce in a structured military environment benefiting from existing garrison/regional facilities such as gyms and rehabilitation facilities.

The ACC will also provide further welfare services such counselling, career management and resettlement and will cater for families as they support the patient.

Erskine's Chief Executive Colonel Martin Gibson, former Chief of Staff of the Army in Scotland, said "Erskine is delighted to be playing its part, working in partnership with the MOD and Help for Heroes on providing a solution on the best care possible for those wounded and injured while serving their country. Pathfinder will provide an ideal platform for those returning to their unit, and for those who are unfortunately leaving the Army."

Bryn Parry Chief Executive of Help for Heroes said "Help for Heroes is delighted to be part of the Army Convalescence Centres initiative. It is a much needed resource to help our wounded onto the next stage of their recovery and it will give them a launch pad to a new life."

Haggis Joy For Residents

Burns night celebrations at the Erskine Edinburgh Home were handed a welcome boost in the shape of a 5kg haggis.

Captain Jimmy Springthorpe, of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards based at Edinburgh Castle, presented the traditional Scottish dish to resident Ian Grieve, RS, aged 89, to boost their celebration evening.

The haggis was used as the focal point of a Homecoming Scotland event held in Edinburgh the previous week when it was parachuted to the ground by the Golden Lions squad.

But on January 25th - the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns - the haggis took pride of place at the Gilmerton home's celebrations.

Veterans took part various events throughout the day including a singing session, quiz and a special burns concert.

Lynn Suttie, Erskine Edinburgh Home manager, said: "The residents really appreciated the donation of the haggis from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, and it made their Burns night supper extra special."

Eastern Star Visit To Edinburgh

The Erskine Edinburgh home enjoyed a generous start to the New Year thanks to a welcome donation of £4,500 from the Eastern District Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

The members of the organisation raised the fantastic total for the Gilmerton home by hosting a series of events including BBQ, raffles, dance nights, coffee mornings and a stovies evening in 2008.

Erskine, which provides unrivalled care for ex-Service men and women in Edinburgh and across Scotland, was picked from a secret ballot as the Eastern District Grand Chapter's chosen charity after its members put forward suggestions of who they would like to donate to.

Lynn Suttie, Erskine Edinburgh home manager and resident Archie Brown, RS, aged 94, were delighted to receive the cheque from Worthy District Grand Matron, Mrs Christine Burton, on Tuesday evening (January 6).

Mrs Burton was joined at the presentation by Worthy District Grand Patron, Mr Stuart Walker and members from across Edinburgh and the Lothians. The group also took time out to tour the facilities and hear a presentation by David Hamilton, Edinburgh fundraiser.

Mr Brown, a resident at Erskine Edinburgh since 2004, was overwhelmed by the donation. He said: "It is a great pleasure to see just how much effort went into this fundraising and I want to thank the Order of the Eastern Star for their generosity because they will never know how much this means to the Erskine Edinburgh home."

Mrs Burton added: "We tried to raise this money so we would make somebody's life better and if we make one veteran's life better in Erskine Edinburgh then we have achieved our aim."

11 volunteers from NHS projects New Victoria & Stobhill Hospitals got together to raise funds for Erskine by climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. With 11,177ft to climb and 584 miles to drive they had certainly raised the heights of team efforts.

Their expedition started at the base of Ben Nevis, then after their terrific start they then travelled from Fort William to Seathwaite, Cumbria to board their next climb which was Scafell Pike. With two valiant efforts behind them the dedicated climbers where then driven to the base of Snowdon mountain to complete their special challenge. With weather in the team's favour, they set off at a triumphant pace and managed to complete with 30 minutes to spare celebrating with a hot mug of tea!

Susan O’Neill, Glasgow Fundraiser for Erskine said :
"It's truly a remarkable effort that the team from Balfour Beatty gave in their 3 peaks challenge, not only with the obvious 3 mountains to climb but undertaking it all within on 24 hours…including travelling time. I'd like to offer a big thank you on behalf of all the residents and staff at Erskine for your fantastic dedication. The money that was raised was phenomenal and will go a long way in helping to provide care for some of the 1300 ex-service men and women we help each year."

What a Cracker

The 2008 Erskine Christmas Cracker fair was a resounding success raising £25,000. The event was held, for the first time, in the fantastic Ingliston Country Club and Equestrian Centre in Bishopton.

The official opening, on Thursday 20th November, by Councillor Derek Mackay, pictured with Paul Fraser, owner of Ingliston, and Colonel Martin Gibson, Chief Executive of Erskine, heralded the arrival of 1,300 visitors over the two day event. More than 2000 people in total attended the surrounding Ingliston 4 day Christmas Extravaganza event.

With over 100 unique stalls to choose from, visitors both old and new had plenty of opportunity to make a positive start on their Christmas shopping. Regular visitors Jill Thomson and Anne MacLean, who travelled from Balloch, said of the new venue "We come along every year to Cracker and this year's location is just fantastic; well laid out with a lovely ambience." Frankie Pearson and Irene Rose from Langbank agreed saying: "What an excellent venue Ingliston is! Much improved, with a spacious and lovely atmosphere".

The Extravaganza package built around Cracker also included a Ceilidh, held on the Friday evening, a Barn Dance on Saturday and a full range of accompanying events, including Kilbarchan Pipe Band, a falconry display, highland dancing and entertainment by the Bishopton Male Voice Choir.

On Sunday, visitors relaxed and enjoyed the authentic taste of real ale as Ingliston played host to its very own beer festival, in association with the Houston Brewing Company and were treated to a wonderful display by the Strathclyde Mounted Police.

Remembrance at Erskine

HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN FC CLUB CAPTAIN MEETS VETERANS AND SERVING SOLDERS AT ERSKINE EDINBURGH HOME

Hearts captain, Christophe Berra joined serving solders of the Royal Scots Borderers and ex-Service men and women of Erskine to remember the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day. Hearts lost some of its most talented players in the Great War - now current players and soldiers take time out to show their respect and remember those who died serving their country during a two-minute silence.

Hearts captain Christophe Berra said, "As a club we know the ultimate sacrifice that our predecessors gave for this country's freedom. We remember every year. We know the significance. We always make sure new players know it too. Those players are our inspiration, because what they did was genuinely heroic."

Hearts captain, members of The Royal Scots Borderers Battalion and Erskine Veterans remembered those who lost their lives in a two minute silence on the site of the new Erskine home extension. After a bugler from The Royal Scots Borderers Battalion played the last post, Berra presented a Hearts football strip to Erskine. The framed shirt - with an embroidered poppy and the word "Remember" underneath - was worn by the captain during their win over St Mirren at Love Street last Saturday.

Jim Scott, Erskine's Chairman, said: "Hearts football club went almost en masse to fight in the Great War. It's been fantastic for us to have Christophe here showing his support. He's a great role model and knows very well what this is all about."

OVER 200 ERSKINE VETERANS IN BISHOPTON MARK REMEMBRANCE

At The Erskine Home, Bishopton over 200 Erskine veterans marked the act of remembrance with a service to remember fallen comrades and all of the men and women who bravely made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
During the poignant and emotional service, WWII veteran Joe McGoran laid the wreath on behalf of the charity aided by Falkland's veteran Bill McDowall. Former Cameron Highlander Joe, aged 92, lost an arm and a leg during a fierce battle at Monte Cassino in 1944.

Joe said "I was wounded pretty badly by a rifle grenade. It blew my right arm and leg off. Although it was unfortunate that I was wounded I was very lucky to still be alive." Commenting on the younger generation Joe said I would urge them all to fight as hard as they can for peace and freedom."

ERSKINE GLASGOW'S FIRST WREATH

Erskine Glasgow held its first Remembrance Service since opening in 2007. On a cold but sunny morning on Friday 7th November Residents, families, friends and staff gathered around the memorial stone within the gardens for the Service of Remembrance.

A wreath was laid by veteran Bill Thomson, RAF, aged 90, along with Norman Yorke, RN, aged 87. A moving reading by Ian Turnbull, Recreation Assistant and haunting music by the Piper made the inaugural Erskine Glasgow service a very special and memorable occasion.

Wheelchair Push

When Jim Macewen and his Rolling Thunder colleagues, all ex or serving service men and women, fundraise for Erskine, they do it in style. No strangers to fundraising for Erskine this latest event, involving wheelchairs was more adventurous than usual.

"The Wheelchair Push for Erskine" started at the Edinburgh Home in Gilmerton, with Jim aka Big Mac being interviewed by Talk 107 Radio. Then the hard work started!. Big Mac along with, John, Maureen, Stuart, Paul, Noreen, Bob, Kevin, Joyce, and Scott and many other friends and family started pushing wheelchairs on the long journey from Edinburgh to The Erskine Home in Bishopton.

Their aim was to raise as much money for Erskine along the way and to arrive in time for the Service of Remembrance. They certainly achieved this; with one gentleman, having heard Jim being interviewed on Talk 107, getting in his car, finding the group on their travels and handing over £300.00.

Royal Marine Reserves and Scout Group join forces to take part in Glasgow’s 5K Big Fun Run

This year's Glasgow Big Fun Run on the 4th October in Bellahouton Park had an influx of Erskine supporters running in aid of our ex-service men and women. The Glasgow division of the Royal Marine Reserves, which is based in Govan, managed to recruit 19 runners for the 5K run. Not only were they taking part in the 5K but they were doing it with 30Kg of weights on their backs. Despite the wind rain and mud they managed to all finish the race in remarkable time!

They were not the only Erskine supporters on the day, Scouts from Paisley also managed to get a team of dedicated supporters to take part in the race. 9 Scouts from 1st Paisley Abbey joined the Royal Marines to run the 5K race.

With the two groups and individuals Erskine had a fantastic team of over 30 runners taking part in the sponsored event.

Glasgow Fundraiser Susan O’Neill said:

"I just wish to pay thanks to every single person who ran the 5K in aid of Erskine. It was a fantastic day and thankfully the rain, wind and mud didn't put anyone off and didn't dampen our spirits one bit!"

The Rotarians decided to donate three lump sums to local charities who they felt made a positive difference to the life of people. Erskine was at the top of their list. The £500 kindly donated will help Erskine continue to offer the high quality of care that our ex-Service men and women so richly deserve.

'Hockey On The Hill' Raises More Than £800 For Erskine

AN UNUSUAL pre-season warm up by a hockey club has raised more than £800 for Erskine.

The ladies section of East Kilbride Hockey Club got out their hockey sticks and put on their hiking boots on Sunday (September 7th) to dribble a whole load of balls UP Tinto Hill – the highest in Lanarkshire.

The 'Hockey on the Hill' event saw a 16-strong group dribble up the hill and raise more than £400 for the charity. The total will be matched by their sponsor Concept Consulting who are contracted by Erskine to support the design, maintenance and infrastructure of their website www.erskine.org.uk

Ian Brooks, managing director, said: "I went along on the day to support the team and it was a tough climb, even without having to dribble the ball! We're really proud of the girls for their efforts and delighted to match the total for such a great cause."

A club spokesperson said: "It was certainly a pre-season with a difference, especially having to negotiate puddles, rocks and other walkers. We got quite a few funny looks on the way up! We had a great time and it was all worth it to raise so much – thanks to everyone who contributed, including people on the hill who gave generously when we explained what we were up to".

"Our sponsors were really supportive, even carting a bottle of champagne to the top to celebrate our achievement."

Rotary Honour Erskine Veteran

On Sunday 7th September Brian Lyle, President of the Rothesay Rotary Club left the Isle of Bute and travelled with 6 of his colleagues to The Erskine Home in Bishopton. Their mission? To award a very special gentleman with an honorary membership of the Rotary Club of Rothesay. The special gentleman in question was former Great Escape veteran Mr Jack Harrison.

Erskine, the charity which cares for ex-Service men and women, welcomed Jack in January of this year. Jack (95) lived in Rothesay before coming to Erskine. As a RAF Pilot Jack was shot down in November 1942. He was captured and taken to Stalag Luft III, made famous by the film "The Great Escape". Here he soon became an integral part of the Great Escape plot. Jack was right hand man to The Big X (played by Richard Attenborough in the film).

Mr Lyle said "We are delighted to award Jack with an honorary membership of the Rothesay Rotary in recognition of his unstinting service since 1960 to the club. The amount of fundraising undertaken by Jack over the years is massive and this award is our way of saying thank you."

Erskine said a big thank you to Gordon Powrie and his colleagues from the Paisley Co-op Funeral Directors. Gordon and his colleagues have presented veterans of The Erskine Home in Bishopton with not just one, but three state of the art karaoke machines. The houses within Erskine benefitting from this new equipment are McKellar House, Red Cross House and most recently Yarrow.

Gordon, an ex Royal Engineer, regularly volunteers at Erskine said "It is humbling to listen to the stories of the veterans and it gives us great pleasure to donate this equipment."

Erskine has received a cheque for £400 from the Thurso Air Cadets. The money was raised, by the cadets, in support of Erskine Week by taking part in a 48 hour survival challenge - "I am an Air Cadet Get me Out Of Here". In spite of the midges being really bad the cadets completed their challenge and were happy to pose with Erskine Teddies.

The Rotary Club Golf Tournament raised £500 and then this amount was doubled when Mrs Mathie applied to the Rotary Foundation for a District Matching Grant.

Mrs Mather said "I know personally of the good care and peace of mind Erskine offers to relatives of residents and we are delighted to be able to donate this sum of money to Erskine"

Kandahar Airfield Half Marathon

Major Pitt writes

"I (successfully) completed the Kandahar Airfield Half Marathon Sunday morning in 1 hour 34 minutes and 38 seconds; so more than 15 minutes quicker than I had expected, coming 97th out of about 200 (or so....) other runners.

The race was in aid of Help for Heroes which the entry fee went to, but I was running for Erskine Hospital. It was an early start at 0530 Local - so about 2am in the UK, quite flat but rocky underfoot. All in all quite fun.

For those of you who have sponsored me thank you very much indeed for your support and I hope that my efforts have matched your expectations - both Erskine and Help for Heroes are extremely worthwhile and important causes. For those of you have yet to sponsor me, please consider doing so. I know that finances may be a little tight right now but a fiver can help a former soldier a heck of a lot. So, if I have managed to persuade you, please follow the link below to the Justgiving website - it's all pukka-genuine.

Once again thank you all for your support, it means a lot to me and to those who are helped by Erskine."

Erskine Print

Erskine Print, one of four commercial operations that support the ex-Service charity Erskine, has expanded its print capability opening up new markets for the Renfrewshire based printer.

The acquisition of a new Direct Imaging Press, a Wide Format Printer and a Production Copier will ensure greater productivity, flexibility, faster turnaround, and places Erskine Print in a better position to meet printing requirements from buyers across Scotland.

The new machinery will also provide employment opportunities for more ex-Service personnel, as the new technology is more geared to IT skills than traditional printing methods.

Other benefits of this investment will see less wastage and a more environmentally friendly process, which fits in with the charity’s drive for a smaller carbon footprint. The machine was so large that part of the wall had to be knocked through to get it into the building.

Print Manager, Alan Crawley said, “For over ten years now Erskine Print has been providing a range of services for both the commercial and domestic marketplace – essentially a high street printer in an out of town situation. Now we are in a strong position to win a significant share of all full colour print work and handle a much wider range of business. The Wide Format Printer will also open up new opportunities in graphics, which will appeal to individuals as much as the business market place whether it is banners, personalised cards, promotional items such as pop-up stands and vehicle graphics to name a few.”
