Shadow Defence Secretary Visits Erskine Edinburgh Home

The veterans and staff of the Erskine Edinburgh Home this week welcomed Dr Liam Fox MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence for a tour of the newly-expanded building.

He was accompanied by Dr Neil Hudson, Parliamentary candidate for Edinburgh South, as they toured the extensive facilities available for former members of the Armed Forces at the Gilmerton care home which recently opened a new 48-bed expansion.

Dr Fox MP, welcomed by Erskine’s Chief Executive, Major Jim Panton, visited one of the 88 bedrooms which are suitable for both men and women and have full disabled access with en-suite facilities.

He then took the time to speak to Erskine veterans including George Murdoch, RAF, aged 88. Before the end of his visit Dr Fox MP spent time in the home’s dedicated activities area where a weekly exercise class took place, run by the Physiotherapy team at the Erskine Edinburgh Home.

Dr Fox MP ended his tour with a visit to the Personnel Recovery Centre, run in partnership with Erskine and the Army.

It is the second time the Shadow Defence Secretary has visited Erskine’s Edinburgh home, previously he toured in 2008 when work had started on the new expansion.

Dr Fox MP said:"It was great to get a chance to come back to the Erskine Edinburgh Home. I was immensely impressed the last time I visited with Neil Hudson. Erskine Edinburgh and now the new Personnel Recovery Centre here are going from strength to strength in supporting our veterans and Service personnel to whom we owe so much."

Conservative candidate for Edinburgh South, Neil Hudson added: "I was delighted to be able to bring the Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox back to the Erskine Edinburgh Home. It was great to see the new expansion to the Home and meet staff and residents here including in the new Personnel Recovery Centre. Everyone here does a fantastic job supporting our Armed Forces to such a high level."

Scottish Veterans Fund Grants &pound10,000 To Erskine

Erskine is to benefit from a £10,000 grant from the Scottish Veterans Fund to head up its Supported Transition Project.

Housing and Communities Minister, Alex Neil MSP, announced the funding along with cash boosts for 10 other new projects during a visit to the Erskine Edinburgh Home this week.

The projects benefiting from the cash will deliver new or innovative approaches to veterans’ issues or activities not funded by the Scottish Government or MoD.

Erskine’s Supported Transition Project will aim to provide soldiers who are leaving the Forces with housing, employment and training.

During his time at the Erskine Edinburgh Home Mr Neil MSP talked to veterans, including James Scully, RMP, aged 94. He then toured the Personnel Recovery Centre which is part of the Edinburgh home.

Jim Panton, Chief Executive of Erskine, said: “I am pleased that Alex Neil paid a visit to the Erskine Edinburgh Home and Personnel Recovery Centre. I would also like to thank him for the £10,000 grant Erskine has received from the Scottish Veterans Fund which we will use for our Supported Transition Project. This project will see Erskine providing wounded or injured soldiers who are leaving the Forces with housing, employment and training to help ease the transition back into civvy street. This could not come at a more important time due to the ongoing operations our Armed Forces are involved in throughout the world. I hope this will encourage the public to donate to our cause in order that we can continue to provide the highest standard of care to veterans for many years to come.”

Mr Neil MSP added: “The Scottish Government is determined to increase support for Scotland’s armed forces veterans. We will never forget the bravery of our heroes or the debt of gratitude we owe them. These projects will allow veterans to use the skills, experience and confidence gained through their service careers as well as helping them adjust to civilian life.”

Veteran Launches Free Memory Checks At Glasgow Clinic

Glasgow veterans worried about memory loss are being urged by a WW2 hero to enlist for free memory screenings at a specialist clinic in the city.

The initiative by long-time Erskine supporter, the Glasgow Memory Clinic, which is at the forefront of developing new treatments for dementia, memory loss and Alzheimer’s Disease, launched the free screening initiative with Moir Garrett MBE. The 83-year-old is urging his fellow veterans who are concerned that their memory is deteriorating to contact the clinic.

Mr Garrett, a radio officer in the merchant navy during the Second World War, said: “I went to the Glasgow Memory Clinic when I noticed I was becoming increasingly forgetful. It was peculiar things that I was forgetting, things that I knew well but suddenly couldn’t recall such as the name of flowers.

“I wanted to find out if this was just a case of my getting older or if there was a more serious cause so I contacted the clinic. I would highly recommend veterans who encounter noticeable changes in their memory to get screened.”

The memory screenings are open to veterans over 60-years-old who are concerned about significant deterioration in their memory. Symptoms of memory loss include: forgetting recent conversations, misplacing items and repeating oneself. The first stage will be a telephone interview which may then be followed by a face-to-face interview and assessment at the Glasgow Memory Clinic, which sponsored Erskine’s Military Ball last September.

Dr Fraser Inglis, Consultant Physician and founder of the Glasgow Memory Clinic, said: “After the initial telephone conversation applicants may be asked to come in and see us to take part in a screening. It is not painful or invasive and will take around one hour. There is no cost involved and after the screening at our clinic we will be able to give the patient an indication of how their memory is functioning.

“If we find that the patient’s memory is not functioning well then we can arrange a follow up appointment and then discuss potential courses of treatment with their GP.

“Severe memory impairment causes suffering not only to the person with the disease, but also to their family and friends. Therefore early diagnosis will help in identifying the correct treatments and support required.”

The Glasgow Memory Clinic is based in a new £4m facility within the West of Scotland Science Park and is internationally recognised as a leading independent research organisation dedicated to finding better treatments for those with Memory Impairment, Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

For further information call 0141 948 0206 or visit www.glasgowmemoryclinic.com.

The Erskine Edinburgh Home marked the contribution of its volunteers by holding a special awards afternoon recently.

Hosted by Jim Scott, Erskine Chairman, our volunteers of all ages came together to honour the care home’s Volunteer and Young Volunteer of the Year, voted for by their peers.

Joyce Smith and Helen Aitken were awarded with the Volunteer of the Year for their commitment to the Erskine cause.

Joyce regularly spends three days a week lending a hand at the Erskine Edinburgh Home, taking part in various tasks including helping out with activities and music classes. Helen, the home’s Flower co-ordinator, brings colour to the Edinburgh home with her floral arrangements. As one of our longest volunteers she has arranged flowers and plants for events including the opening of the Army Recovery Centre and HRH The Princess Royal visit in November.

Scott Gorman, one of our youngest volunteers, picked up the Young Volunteer of the Year prize for his astonishing commitment to Erskine since he began volunteering in August last year.

Painting Fit for A Princess

HRH The Princess Royal delighted veterans of Erskine when she visited three of the charity’s Renfrewshire based homes recently.

Her visit to The Erskine Home was made extra special by the presentation of a beautiful painting which was painted by veteran William Wylie, (RN) aged 89.

The Princess thanked William for his painting, a crystal vase filled with blossoming red roses, and asked him how long he had been painting for.

For William, who will be 90 in May, to have painted such a lovely picture was a feat in itself as he has extremely poor sight.

The Princess, who is no stranger to Erskine, chatted to veterans in The Erskine Home, the Princess then visited the Erskine Park Home taking time to talk to veterans and their families.

Her trip was finished with a trip to the Erskine Mains Home where she was presented with a beautiful flower arrangement by May Hoggit aged 9 and Katja Louise Jones aged 4.

Pipers Trail Visit The Erskine Veterans Home

Erskine were delighted to
welcome, the pipers and drummers of the “The Pipers Trail” to The Erskine Home
in Bishopton. The Pipers Trail put on a fantastic play as well as playing
some of the veterans favourite tunes on the pipes and drums. After the wonderful performance the party met and had afternoon tea with the
veterans.

The Pipers' Trail is a
celebration of the Army's links with Scotland through music, culture and
tradition.

It set off from Shetland on 17 June and has formed a
major part of the centenary celebrations for the Territorial Army as it travels
through Scotland. Pipers and drummers will make a journey of more than 470
miles (756 kilometres) with each mile piped by an individual soldier until the
end of the route in Edinburgh.

Colonel Martin Gibson, Erskine’s
Chief Executive said “It is fitting that the Pipers Trail have included Erskine
in their tour of Scotland, playing in front of so many veterans who served
their country in WWII, the vast majority of which were conscripts or part of
the reserves. This is reflected today, where the professionalism and courage of
our reservists allow our country to go on operations.”

Lieutenant Mark O’Rourke from the
Pipers Trail said “it is a great honour to play here at Erskine for the
veterans, those who have gone before us and have done so much for their country.
It reminds us what has been done in the past and provides us with inspiration
for the future.”

Taxi Driver Gives Away An Early Present To Scotland's Veterans

Taxi Driver Robert Malcolm has delivered an early Christmas present to the veterans charity Erskine by branding the outside of his cab.

Robert, from Kirkintilloch, drove to the Erskine Veterans Home in Bishopton today to show veterans the purple taxi.

After attending an Erskine presentation in Glasgow City Chambers four weeks ago, Robert knew he was going to help Erskine. Then he had the idea of donating valuable advertising space. He said “after hearing a talk from a Falklands veteran I knew I wanted to help the charity that had saved his life. I contacted Erskine to see if they would be happy and we took it from there. It costs £28k per day to keep the five homes across Scotland open and hopefully my taxi will help spread the word.”

A few weeks later and the brilliant purple taxi drove through the same gates that have seen 75,000 veterans enter since 1916. Residents and staff came out to see the taxi and WWII RAF veteran Joe Parker climbed inside to have a look from the customer’s point of view.

Joe, who was personal flight engineer to Archie McKellar, said “Robert is a very generous man and I think the taxi looks great. We are always very grateful for the support we get from the public and with the ongoing conflicts our younger veterans will need this support for many years to come.”

Winter Wonderland

“Snow is expected to fall every single day in December“ and that is the official forecast of Iain Milligan Manager of the Erskine Garden Centre, Bishopton.

Not just content with decking out the garden centre with the most fantastic range of Christmas decorations and gifts to be found locally but Iain had to make sure his outside patio had the “authentic” look and feel of winter.

Erskine Garden Centre is one of the four businesses run by the charity Erskine, offering employment to disabled people and veterans, as well as providing care for over 1300 veterans every year throughout Scotland, within its five care homes.

Garden Centre is open 7 days of the week, Monday to Friday 9.30 am to 5.00 pm and Saturday and Sunday 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

The Coffee Shop located within the Garden Centre, famous for its sticky buns, is great place to meet up for a coffee and a chat in between doing some Christmas Shopping.

Surprised youngsters Zak Own aged 12 from Dumbarton and David Brooks aged 12 from Clydebank were delighted when the snow started to fall! They weren’t too happy, however to find out that there wouldn’t be enough to start building a snowman!

Iain said: “Christmas isn’t Christmas without snow” He continued with a laugh “and here at Erskine we aim to please but I am not making any promises about snowmen seriously though our range of Christmas products is vast, we have everything from garden decorations to table decorations! You will definitely need a cup of coffee by the time you have finished looking at it all.”

Veterans Sing-A-Long

There is nothing the veterans at The Erskine Home in Bishopton like more than old good old fashioned sing song.

So when the Primary 7 pupils of Thorn Primary, Johnstone called in last week that is exactly what happened.

Old favourites such as “White Cliffs of Dover” to the haunting melody of “We’ll meet Again”
echoed around the Recreation Hall.

The pupils had practiced long and hard for the day and Class Teacher Margaret Holmes said: “It’s been very enjoyable practising the songs; the children are studying WWII at the moment. We come along every year to sing to and with the veterans and we enjoy every single minute, we hope they do to”.

Soloist Lauren Dougan (aged 11) who sang “A Long Way to Tipperary” to resounding applause said: “I like coming to Erskine it’s so pretty here”.

Finishing with “Run Rabbit Run Rabbit” the children took their bows and joined the veterans for well earned juice and snack.

Veteran Ronnie Lindsay , RAPC, aged 86, said: “I went to Thorn Primary when I was 5 years old – a long time ago, the singers are definitely better now a days!”

Colin McPhail, Erskine’s Recreation manager said: “Erskine provides care for over 1300 veterans every year and we are always try to ensure the entertainment we have is varied and enjoyable; Thorn Primary were a big hit today!”

Reptile House Visit To The Erskine Glasgow Home

Last month saw veterans of the charity Erskine’s Glasgow Home getting up close and personal with snakes, skinks, geckos and tarantulas with a visit from the scaly and hairy residents of Glasgow City Councils Queens Park Reptile House.

The visit led by Stephen Gilbride and Chris Hannah of the Glasgow City Council Land and Environmental Services based at Queens Park Nursery proved to be a big success.

Many of the veterans gathered to welcome a posse of the cold-blooded visitor and a testament to the success of the afternoon was that not one resident shouted ‘Get me out of here!’

The visiting party included blue tongue skinks, leopard geckos, Chilean rose tarantulas and grey rat snakes.

The veterans enjoyed a stimulating and informative afternoon handling the creatures and learning about their habits. Thankfully none of the visitors wanted a tour of the building!

Jimmy O’Donnell, REME, aged 82 said: ‘I’ve only been at Erskine Glasgow a short time but I’ve already settled in. There are lots of things to do here but I never expected to be handling snakes and lizards. I’ve never touched one before but I met much worse whilst serving in the REME!’

Kaye Ramage, Recreation Assistant said: “‘Erskine looks after over 1300 veterans a year and we aim to make life as stimulating and interesting as possible. Our residents are a feisty bunch, having been through a number of conflicts in their time and are usually up for anything. Our work is greatly supported within the community and we extend our thanks to Robert Booth, Executive Director, Land and Environmental Services, Glasgow City Council for providing this valuable service to our veterans.’

The veterans of The Erskine Home in Bishopton were in safe hands last week when RSM Michael Davidson and his fellow Marines from the Royal Fleet Protection Force visited Erskine.

Travelling from Faslane for the charity’s annual Tree of Honour ceremony the Marines were guests along with the evenings main sponsors Central Car Auctions.

RSM Michael Davidson, who himself hails from Arbroath, has been to Erskine before along with Marine Stewart Fisher, Marine Rob McMurrich, Lance Corporal Craig Hume and Marine Steven Buckley.

He said: “We always like visiting Erskine and chatting to the veterans, especially at this time of the year. This is just a flying visit but we are due a bigger and more official visit within the next couple of months which will see at least a dozen Marines and senior officers coming to Erskine.”

The Tree of Honour holds a special place in the hearts of the Marines as they know only too well what it is like to be away from loved ones at Christmas and sadly what is it like to remember those we have lost at Christmas too.

Tree of Honour Lights Up Erskine Homes Across Scotland

Erskine homes light up the cold winter evening when the Trees of Honour were switched on at the veterans’ charity’s five care homes across Scotland.

At The Erskine Home in Bishopton, a Lantern Procession by the children of Rashielea Primary School followed by carol singing set the scene for Pastor Arthur O’Malley carrying out the tree dedication ceremony. Joe Parker, RAF, aged 89 and a veteran of WWII did the honour of switching on the tree lights.

The Erskine Tree of Honour allows people the opportunity to sponsor a light in memory of loved ones who have passed away or those who cannot be with us this Christmas, as they serve their country on operations throughout the world. All of the proceeds from the tree go towards providing the highest standard of care to our veterans.

At the Erskine Edinburgh Home, Shona Mathews whose husband Sergeant Jonathan Mathews of Highlanders, 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland was joined by her daughter Meghan to switch on the lights. Children from Gilmerton Primary School sang a selection of Christmas carols for the home’s veterans, their families and staff. Reverend David Dixon followed by dedicating the Tree.

And at the Erskine Glasgow Home Partick Thistle legend and now Director of Community Development Denis McQuade and striker Chris Erskine switched on the Tree of Honour lights.

The evening started with Erskine Glasgow Home manager Gordon welcoming everyone and there was then carol singing from the choir of St Johns Renfield Church. The Reverend David Keddie then said a prayer of Dedication and the lights were switched on.

To sponsor a dedication on the Tree of Honour visit www.justgiving.com/erskine-hospital or contact the Erskine Fundraising Department on 0141 814 4555

Erskine Celebrate St.Andrews Day

Watching a documentary about recent conflicts moved businessman Eddie McKenna, from Hamilton to contact Colin McPhail, Recreation Manager of the Erskine Veterans Home in Bishopton to offer the veterans a “Dram of Whisky” at Remembrance.

When Colin realised, however, that the “dram ” was in fact thousands of pounds worth of malt and blended whiskies with a gallon of whisky thrown in he asked Eddies permission to use some of the whisky for a “St Andrew’s Day Celebration”. Eddie was really pleased that his whisky, collected over many years, would be used in this way, bringing so much pleasure to the veterans and had no hesitation in saying yes.

So on the afternoon of St Andrews Day veterans were greeted on arrival to a patriotically decorated hall with Scottish music playing and all of the staff in traditional Scottish dress, which of course all added to the very convivial atmosphere. Then it was down to the serious business of the whisky tasting. Over 50 bottles of old favourites such as Glenfiddoch, Glenmorangie, Cardhu and Balvenie to the more elusive Glenfardas, Provence and from the oldest distillery in Crieff, Perthshire the famous Glenturret malt ensured there was something for everyone.

Colin McPhail said: “The veterans have had a Ball; we can’t thank Eddie enough for his kindness and generosity in donating this fantastic amount of whisky. With Christmas coming up the bottles left over from today will be distributed amongst all the houses within The Erskine Home and the some will be raffled to raise much needed fund; indeed, within Eddies’ collection there is a very special bottle of malt which has been donated by Forbes Robertson, the record holder of the largest selection of whisky, together with certificate of authentication which we hope will help raise lots of cash.”

Willie Miller, RASC, aged 71 from High Earnock said: “I have had a great afternoon, what a tremendous donation. My favourite malt, Glenmorangie from Tain was here so that made my day” and fellow veteran George Blair, RE, aged 90 from Blantyre said: “What a generous donation we are all very grateful to Eddie for giving us such a lovely afternoon".

Eddie, who joined in the fun said: “If my donation puts a smile on one veterans face then it has been worth it”.

Christmas Cards Crafted For Erskine

Christmas has arrived early for the Royal Scots Shop in The Erskine Home, Bishopton.

Dozens of beautifully handmade Christmas Cards have been donated for sale by Paisley buddy Janet Gribben.

The cards, of all shapes and sizes, are selling like hot cakes to veterans, families, staff and visitors alike.

Janet, from Paisley, has been crafting for nearly eight years and has spent hours crafting cards suitable for children, general use or special friends.

Using a combination of decoupage and the latest crafting techniques Janet has created an exceptionally special selection of cards which have a very personal touch.

David Paterson, Volunteers Manager, who manages The Royal Scots Shop in the Bishopton care home said: “When we received the cards we were simply delighted. There has obviously been so much time and work put into making them. Our veterans enjoy shopping and it is always good to have something different on sale.”

He continued: “The shop is always busy and the cards have been flying off the shelf, they are very popular!”

All proceeds from the sale of Janet’s cards will be put towards maintaining the highest standard of care given to veterans at Erskine’s care homes throughout Scotland.

HRH The Princess Royal Officially Opens Home Expansion

HRH The Princess Royal officially opened the £8.6m Erskine Edinburgh Home expansion on the 14th November and met many of the 56 veterans currently receiving first-class care in the state-of-the-art care home.

The Princess Royal was welcomed by Mr James Scott, Chairman, and Major Jim Panton, Chief Executive, to the original home which she also officially opened on the 1st March 2002.

After meeting many of the staff and residents, from both WWII and recent conflicts, The Princess Royal then toured the new 48-bed building, which benefits from private en-suite rooms, wide-ranging social activities and enhanced medical care.

Starting in Linburn House, named in recognition of a significant contribution made by the Scottish National Institution for the War Blinded, The Princess Royal was then welcomed by staff and residents of Trenchard House, built thanks to a £750,000 RAF Benevolent Fund donation, and Mair House, named in recognition of a legacy left by the late Miss Sheila Mair from Peterhead.

For the final stop of her extensive tour, The Princess Royal visited Mark Wright House, the UK’s first Army Recovery Centre, which is a partnership between the Army and veterans charities Erskine and Help for Heroes.

The Princess Royal officially unveiled the plaque and commented on the ‘evolution’ of Erskine over recent years and the generous backing that the veterans’ charity receives from its many supporters.

Major Panton said: “We are delighted that The Princess Royal has taken time out of her busy schedule to meet so many of our veterans and their families today and acknowledge the work of our dedicated staff and volunteers. This expansion will allow us to provide our high standard of care to even more veterans in the Capital and we hope that the incredible support from the nation will continue.”

Local Hockey Club Swaps Sticks For Frogs

Members of Edinburgh based Erskine Stewart Melville Hockey Club, recently swapped their hockey sticks for frogs, to raise money for veterans’ charity Erskine.

On 27th February, the Inverleith Clubhouse on Ferry Road was transformed into a race track as over 50 people took part in a frog derby – racing 6 specially created MDF frogs on a homemade track.

Coupled with an auction, which included prizes for Knockhill Race Course, the night raised over £1,300.

Club members decided to raise money for Erskine after a former member of the club, Paul Lambert, was injured in a landmine accident in Afghanistan in November last year.

The Club’s President, Malky Pentland, said: “It came as a real shock to our club’s members to hear the tragic news about Paul’s accident before Christmas. When it was suggested that we hold a social event in his name to raise funds for Erskine, everyone was very supportive.

“We were delighted to hear that Paul was happy for us to do this and he is very positive about his future, even suggesting he’d be back in goals next season! Everyone who came along to the Frog Derby had a great night in support of this really worthwhile cause.”

John Fyfe, Erskine’s Edinburgh Fundraiser, said: “The backing of supporters such as Erskine Stewart Melville Hockey Club is instrumental in helping Erskine to provide the high standard of care for which it is renowned. With the opening of our new expanded home, at Gilmerton, which is also home to the UK’s first Personnel Recovery Centre, we are relying more than ever on groups and individuals to help our worthwhile cause.”

Mearns History Group's Wartime Book For Erskine

Proceeds from a book devised and written by the Mearns History Group are being donated to the veterans’ charity Erskine.

The booklet called Memories of Mearns in Wartime features interviews collated by Eleanor Spalding by those who lived through war. The group was encouraged to gather the tales following 70th anniversary since the outbreak of the Second World War in 2009 and also the loss of the last surviving soldiers of the First World War died.

Stories talk about the arrival of the evacuees, feeding hungry ATS girls with the baking which Mother had just done for the family, finding “German” troops asleep on the streets, and explosions in the back garden.

The group decided that Erskine would be a fitting benefactor of the proceeds due to its work with ex-Service men and women who lived through WWI, WWII and further peacekeeping missions of the 20th and 21st century.

Pete Macfarlane, Erskine Fundraiser, said: “It is a fitting gesture that the Mearns History Group has chosen Erskine to benefit from the proceeds of the sale of their book Memories of Mearn in Wartime. Without the support from generous individuals and organizations such as this, Erskine would not be able to provide the high standard of care for veterans, who fought so bravely for their country, across Scotland.”

The booklet costs £3.50.

If you are interested in buying a copy of the book please call our fundraising team on 0141 814 4555

Soldiers from the 11th Signals Regiment will put their endurance to the test by completing the 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of Erskine.

Staff Sergeant Jim McGrory and his team made up of 18 serving soldiers including Ricky Gaston, Phil Smith, Andy Hall, Dave Bayley, Ryan Ashton, Tom Bould, Seb McDonald, Matt McLean, Sean Moran, Carl Nazer-Abbasi, Stephen Rowe, Neil Wilcox and Kevin Young will attempt the challenge from the 12th-14th March.

This challenge is renowned for its gruelling and arduous terrain but it will be made even more testing due to the lack of daylight hours and weather at this time of year. The team hope to complete the challenge, which involves scaling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, in less than 24 hours.

So far the team has raised over £2,500 but hope to add to their total to raise money for Erskine, a charity very close to their heart.

The group from 1 (Ouston) Squadron also recently raised money by taking part in a bag packing at ASDA Poole.

Scottish Building Society Raises Money for Erskine

Scottish Building Society staff decided to donate money to Erskine, the charity which cares for ex-Service men and women, instead of sending internal Christmas cards and raised a total of £147 which was then increased to £300 by Society Chief Executive, Gerry Kay.

Scottish Building Society IT System Officer Stuart Aitken, who launched the fundraising initiative, said:“I don’t believe the extent of the job the armed services do is acknowledged enough by most people. There is too much focus on the politics war and not on the guys on the frontline who sign up to do a job, with some paying a higher price than others.”

Peter Macfarlane, Erskine fundraiser, added: “This is an extremely kind donation from the Scottish Building Society and it is very gratefully received by Erskine. We can only provide the high level of care our residents deserve with the support of the local community and Scottish Building Society has really shown its community spirit by giving this donation.”

Memorabilia Day Raises Cash For Erskine

Primary 6 and 7 pupils of the Glassford Primary School in Strathaven organised a World War 2 Memorabilia Day and raised £250 for Erskine.

The pupils, who had been studying WWII as part of their curriculum, worked hard to make the day a great success. Miss Ashleen Hill, the P6/7 class teacher who supervised the project, said; "The pupils did most of the research themselves, designed the tickets and posters and invited parents and members of the local community along to the event".

Peter Macfarlane, Erskine's Glasgow Fundraiser travelled to Strathaven to the Glassford Primary School where he joined the schools morning assembly and afterwards met the enterprising pupils. The P 6/7 pupils proudly handed over a cheque for £250.

Peter said: "The pupils have done wonderfully. Firstly taking an interest in such an important part of history and then helping raise money to care for some of those who took part in WW2 is really special. For a school of this size to raise that amount of money in one day is quite an achievement."

Syth To Rock

One of the very best metal bands Glasgow has to offer, and one of the top live acts you're likely to see, are backing the veterans’ charity Erskine.

Syth have been entertaining rockers in Scotland for the best part of eight years and are dedicating a song from their second album The Reckoning to Erskine.

Available for download from most online store including itunes and Napster, ‘Three Remain’ is inspired by the bravery of British troops serving in recent conflicts. The most commercial track on the album, it will appeal to all music lovers.

Front man, Niall Russell said: “Syth chose Erskine as our charity because we know the lengths they will go to ensure that ex-service men and women are looked after on return from conflict; continuously reviewing their care in order to keep up to date with the needs that modern warfare can bring.

“Many of our troops return with both mental and physical injuries which go unseen by society. Erskine ensure that these brave men and women have a voice and the care they deserve in their transition back into society. These people are an inspiration to us so it’s only right we give something back.”

Catriona Connelly, Erskine fundraiser, said: “We are delighted Syth have chosen the proceeds from their new song ‘Three Remain’ will come directly to Erskine. Without the dedication of supporters such as Syth we would not be able to provide the highest standard of care for veterans of all ages across Scotland.”

If you would like to see the band perform live they will be showcasing their latest album The Reckoning at a gig in Rockers, Midland Street, Glasgow on Thursday 11th February 2010 from 7.30pm.

Further information and tickets are available at www.syth.co.uk priced at £6 with proceeds of this event also going to the Erskine.

The Pigs On Bikes Visit The Erskine Home

A team of Police officers who swapped their beat for bicycles to raise money for Erskine have presented a cheque for £1635 to its veterans.

The team of officers, from North Lanarkshire Division and the Court Branch in Glasgow, raised £3,250 for Erskine and The Moira Fund during a fundraising challenge earlier this year.

On Christmas Eve, some of the team visited The Erskine Home, Bishopton, to present their cheque to veterans and Erskine fundraiser Linda O’Malley.

To raise the money the Pigs on Bikes, cycled approximately 65 miles from Edinburgh city centre, along the Forth & Clyde canal to the High Court in Glasgow on the 5th September to raise the fantastic amount.

Since forming in 1999, they have raised thousands of pounds for various charities including the Special Care Unit of Bellshill Maternity Hospital, Scottish Spina Bifida Association, Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and the Craighalbert Centre.

This time the officers from Lanarkshire – Sergeant David Callander and Constables Alan Thompson, Alistair Carson, Dougie Thomson, John Houlihan, Dougie McFadzean, Gillian Monroe, Derek White, Allan Cuthbert, Gus MacKinnon, Derek Graham and Dougie Wotherspoon – braved heavy wind and rain to complete the course in around 5 hours and were welcomed to the finishing line by Baillie Catherin McMaster. They were also backed up on the day by Inspector Iain Ross and Constables Gillian Anderson and Bob Burt.

Sergeant David Callander said: “It was a privilege for our group to be able to meet some of the residents at The Erskine Home and to be given a tour of the very impressive facility there. It is good to know that the money we raised will go toward providing a high standard of care for 1300 veterans each year, people who have served their country so well and who rightly deserve such good care and support.”

Our ex-Service men and women at Erskine know only too well what it is like to spend Christmas missing loved ones.

To recognise absent friends and family, Erskine will be having a Tree of Honour at each of its five homes across Scotland.

Each tree will be decorated with dedications in memory of those who cannot be with us this Christmas.

Our main dedication ceremony will be at The Erskine Home, Bishopton on Thursday 3rd December with smaller ceremonies held at our homes in Erskine, Glasgow and Edinburgh on the same evening.

You can remember one of your loved ones by visiting Erskine’s Tree of Honour page. We will then place your dedication on one of our trees.

John Fyfe, Erskine fundraiser, said: “Both our ex-Service men and women and the families of those currently serving overseas know only too well what it’s like to spend Christmas missing loved ones. The dedication of the Tree of Honour will help us bridge the gap between Remembrance and Christmas - and give us the chance to remember those absent friends and family at this special time of the year – whether they’re no longer with us, or whether they are thousands of miles away.

Can Collection At Ibrox

On a very cold a foggy Saturday last week, 50 hardy volunteers from the Rangers Supporters Erskine Appeal braved the elements to take part in one of the biggest can collections Erskine has been involved with.

Covering just about every inch of pavement around Ibrox before the game against St Johnstone, they collected from Home and Away fans alike, and in the space of only 2 hours, raised over £6,500.

Catriona Connelly, Glasgow Fundraiser said – “For these volunteers to have given up their time on such a cold day, and to have raised such an amazing amount is just tremendous. We cannot thank them enough for turning out in such numbers, and for collecting so happily and willingly, so that our ex- Service men and women can receive the very best care possible”.

Central Car Auctions Are Erskine Christmas Stars!

Central Car Auctions have come to the rescue of Erskine by sponsoring the Tree of Honour Christmas tree and lights.

During the preparation for the ceremony, Erskine discovered the tree usually used would not be suitable, and desperately needed sponsorship to allow the event to go ahead.

The Tree of Honour ceremony allows guests to remember those who are not with us at Christmas and pay respect to those people who have lost their lives over the past years. It is a very important part of the Erskine year, allowing residents and guests to come together at Christmas.

Thankfully, Central Car Auctions stepped in at the last minute and provided significant sponsorship to make sure that the guests and residents of Erskine could still pay their respects at this special time of year.

Glasgow Fundraiser for Erskine, Catriona Connelly said – “Without the amazing generosity of Central Car Auctions, we could not have held our Tree of Honour ceremony, they really have been Erskine’s Christmas Stars, and we are immensely grateful to them.”

Spar stores from across the west coast of Scotland got carried away with their latest fundraising challenge in aid of the veterans’ charity Erskine.

The stores from Erskine, Port Glasgow, Weymss Bay, Largs and Lochwinnoch very kindly donated the proceeds from their two pence charge for plastic bags to Erskine. And over the course of the year they raised the amazing amount of £2,500 through the sale of 125,000 bags!

Recently, Erskine veteran Peter Wilson, RAF, aged 81, was presented a cheque by staff at their Erskine store in Bargarren Shopping Centre.

Catriona Connelly, Erskine fundraiser, said: “This is an extremely kind donation from Spar stores and is very gratefully recieved by Erskine and the veterans it cares for.

“We can only provide the high level of care our residents deserve with the support of the local community, and Spar has really shown its community spirit by giving this donation.”

Ardrossan Guild Continue It's93-Year Support For Erskine

The Ardrossan Co-operative Women’s Guild has sealed its 93-year support for Erskine by raising £1,200 for the veterans’ charity in 2009

The Guild, which marks its centenary next year, has supported Erskine since it began providing artificial limbs for service men returning from the First World War in 1916.

Then known as The Princess Louise Scottish Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers, it was thanks to the generosity of organisations such as the Ardrossan Co-operative Women’s Guild that Erskine was able to care for the wounded.

Now 93 years on and 75,000 veterans later, its members have increased the tally of donations through the collection of weekly membership fees, baking sales, car boot sales and much more.

Morag Morrison, Guild member and Erskine supporter, said: “We have great fun raising money for Erskine which is a very worthwhile cause and we intend to continue to raise money over the coming years.“

Father and Son Walk John Buchan Way For Erskine

On Sunday 27th September 2009, Barclays employee Brian Mann and his 10 year old son, William, walked the John Buchan Way in the Scottish Borders and raised a tremendous £878 for Erskine.

The money raised will be matched pound for pound, up to £750, as part of the Barclays Community Investment 'Charity Begins at Work' Programme, bringing the total up to £1,628.

David Bond, Community Relations Officer for Barclays said: “At Barclays we strive to strengthen local communities in which we live and work by supporting a range of causes from local schools to centres for older people.

“This is a fantastic example of Barclays staff fundraising with the local community to achieve something which we hope will make a real and lasting difference."

“At Barclays, we take our responsibilities seriously. We're really proud of our leading community investment programme which added up to £52.2 million in 2008. More than 57,000 people were involved in volunteering, fundraising and regular giving and we supported more than 7,000 charities around the world.”

As a charity reliant on voluntary income to provide high quality care services for our residents, Erskine is incredibly grateful to both Brian and William for all of their hard work on our behalf.

Pedalling For Erskine

Veteran Alex Heron, CH, aged 90 was delighted to receive a cheque for the tremendous amount of £1,500, from two charming young ladies, on behalf of Erskine, the veterans charity that cares for ex-Service men and women, of all ages, throughout Scotland.

It was in September, on a sunny Sunday that best buddies Daniela Jaconelli and Bernie Aitken pedalled from Glasgow Green to Edinburgh. It took them nearly six hours with breaks every so often and by the end of their journey they were tired but extremely proud of themselves. Why? They had just raised a whopping £1,500 for Erskine.

The girls, both Primary 7 pupils at Craigholme School for Girls, had first heard of Erskine through Daniela’s father Marco. Marco’s company “Expresso Adesso” supplies coffee to Erskine and had told the girls all about Erskine and a little bit about its history. So when it came to deciding on a charity to cycle for in the Pedal for Scotland events they had no hesitation in choosing Erskine. And when it came to sponsoring the girls family, friends, neighbours and teachers all did so very generously.

Daniela and Bernie said: “It was great fun doing the cycle ride and we really enjoyed coming to Erskine and meeting Alex. We are studying WWII in school and hopefully we will be able to come back to Erskine and meet more of Alex’s friends.”

Lesley Miller, Interim Head of Fundraising for Erskine said: “It’s great to see these two young people reaching out to help our country’s ex-Servicemen and women. They showed great courage and determination in setting themselves such a big challenge. Everyone at Erskine is so impressed by their success as part of the Espresso Adesso Team and so grateful for the wonderful amount of money they raised on our behalf. I know that Alex enjoyed meeting Bernie and Daniela and was thrilled to receive the big cheque from them.”

Explosive Amount For Erskine

The charity Erskine, who cares for veterans throughout Scotland, was recently the nominated charity for the “Association for Petroleum & Explosives Administration”.

At the Company’s recent Conference, Exhibition and Awards Dinner, in the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, the fantastic sum of £2,361.77 was raised for Erskine.

Erskine had been nominated by the Company Chairman Mr Gareth Bourhill, whose late step-father Bill Fitzsimmons, (Devon & Dorset Rifles), was a resident of Erskine Park, one of five throughout the country.

Gareth, who lives in Alexandria is a keen supporter of the charity and knows only too well how Erskine strives to provide the highest standard of care to veterans who have sacrificed so much.

Gareth said; “Guests at the dinner watching the DVD got a flavour for Erskine and the fantastic work it does, I personally have had firsthand experience of the care it offers and it is wonderful." He continued: “Without a doubt the DVD affected many of the guests, bringing home the fact that it is not just WW2 veterans that charities like Erskine look after but from other conflicts too and not just men but women too”.

Lesley Miller, Erskine’s Interim Head of Fundraising said: “Gareth not only did a wonderful thing for our Veterans by raising such a marvelous sum, he also used his position as National Chairman of APEA to help raise awareness of Erskine’s work caring for our country’s ex-Servicemen and women. We are very grateful to him for all his support. It means so much to everyone at Erskine."

Cardross Art Group Brush Up For Erskine

Erskine was delighted to welcome a group of artists from the Cardross Art Group to The Erskine Home in Bishopton recently.

The group led by Arts Group Secretary Patricia Readman did not come empty handed, but with a £1,400 cheque.

The amount was raised at its annual exhibition held in October.

The group organise two exhibitions each year to show case the work of local artists and to raise money for charity. The exhibition is only open to artists living in Cardross and this year’s exhibition displayed the work of 35 artists.

Many of the exhibits were sold and with artists donating 15 per cent of the sale price to the group, 5 per cent of which is used to fund future events and charitable donations, Erskine, the groups chosen charity was ensured of a very generous cheque.

Mrs Readman, organiser of the event as well as group secretary said: “We are extremely pleased because we had thought that with the financial climate as it is we would not have raised as much as last year but we have raised more!”

Erskine’s Head of Community Fundraising, Lesley Miller said: “I know the current and former members of our Armed Forces are very much in people’s hearts and minds at the moment, so it’s wonderful to see the members of the Cardross Arts Group using their artistic talents to make life better for the brave men and women in our care. Every year our charity cares for over 1350 ex-Service men and women and the £1400 so kindly donated by this group will help us do even more.”

Molnlycke Health Care Give Something Back To Erskine

A national healthcare organisation has given something back to the veterans’ charity Erskine by donating £500.

The donation was made on behalf of Mölnlycke Health Care’s Giving Something Back scheme which supports the local community with financial donations.

Evelyn Gilday, Wound Care Sales Representative, nominated Erskine after working closely with the veterans’ charity’s Edinburgh home based in Gilmerton.

Recently she enjoyed an extensive tour of the Erskine Edinburgh Home, which has just completed work on an £8.6million expansion. John Fyfe, Erskine’s Edinburgh fundraiser, was then delighted to receive the cheque from Evelyn Gilday.

John said: “It was a pleasure to meet Evelyn and be able to give her a flavour of the type of care Erskine offers to ex-Service men and women across Edinburgh and Scotland. Donations, no matter how large or small, go towards ensuring that our veterans receive the highest standard of care which they so richly deserve.”

The ‘Giving Something Back’ initiative was launched by Mölnlycke Health Care in 2008 as part of an ongoing programme of supporting the health service and local communities.

John Bentley, Managing Director at Mölnlycke Health Care explained: “We work closely with health professionals and are committed to supporting their work and patient care through an innovative range of single-use products. Within the last year we have helped 6 good causes so far, ranging from an under 13 Football Club to Mencap Respite Support Care. It was a very easy decision for us to support Erskine Edinburgh Home on this occasion since we are so humbled by their work”.

W02 Leith said: “Given that a large number of our service men and women are coming back maimed and injured and also because our services are more in the limelight than before, we decided we would choose Erskine on that basis because it is a very worthwhile cause.”

John Fyfe added: “The backing of supporters such as Rutherford Castle Golf Club is instrumental in helping Erskine to provide the high standard of care for which it is renowned. With the opening of our new expanded home, at Gilmerton, which is also home to the UK’s first Army Recovery Centre, we will be relying more than ever on groups and individuals to help our worthwhile cause.”

Syth Rocks For Erskine

The veterans’ charity Erskine has struck a chord with one of the very best heavy metal bands Glasgow has to offer.

Syth will be showcasing tracks from their latest album plus some old favourites at a charity gig, in aid of Erskine, to be held in Rockers, Midland Street Glasgow on Thursday 24th September 2009. Tickets cost £6 and doors open at 7.30pm.

Erskine is delighted to be benefiting from the show as many of the band’s songs are inspired by the tales of bravery and comradeship found in history books and recent news reports.

Barry Fitzsimmons of Syth said: “We realise that there are people willing to put themselves on the line, living and working in conditions that none of us could ever imagine. We believe these guys should have the best care available to them on return and if we can do a little more to highlight Erskine’s work, then we are honoured to do so.”

Lesley Miller, Head of Community Fundraising for Erskine said: “We are thrilled that Syth have decided to do a benefit gig on Erskine’s behalf. It’s so generous of the band to donate their time and their talents to help our country’s Veterans. The funds that they and their fans raise for this charity really will help make life better for the brave men and women for whom Erskine cares – and we can’t thank them enough."

Loyal Supporter Makes Splash For Erskine Home

A loyal supporter of Erskine will be making waves to try and raise as much money for the veterans’ charity.

Kenny Grant is taking part in the Great Scottish Swim this weekend in memory of his grandfather who was a resident at Erskine until he passed away 10 years ago.

The one-day swimming event takes place at Strathclyde Country Park this weekend (Saturday 29th August) and thousands of entrants will swim for one mile in open water.

Kenny said: “Erskine is a place dear to my family as my Granddad spent a few years in the care of the staff at the ex-service men and women's care homes. Erskine gave him back his mobility, dignity, character and allowed him and my Gran to celebrate and enjoy their Golden Wedding anniversary. Three days after first hearing about the swim and agreeing to participate for Erskine was the 10th anniversary of my Granddad passing away. So this all has come about pretty quickly and has been a happy coincidence for me and I am proud to swim to raise money for Erskine and in my Grandad’s memory.”

Craig's On The Run For Erskine

A loyal supporter of Erskine is on the run for the veterans’ charity after signing up to take part in the Great Scottish Run.

Craig Manson, from Stirlingshire, was inspired to take on the challenge after witnessing first-hand the care that Erskine provides to his Great Uncle Jack Harrison.

Jack, 96, is thought to be the last survivor of The Great Escape one of the most famous incidents of the Second World War when inmates tunnelled their way out Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp. Their actions, under the noses of German guards, were later immortalised in the screen classic starring Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough.

Craig is determined to make sure he can raise as much money as possible to ensure that the high standard of care which veterans, such as his Great Uncle Jack, deserves.

He said: “I am running for Erskine because they are taking great care of my Uncle Jack and provide a great service for ex-serviceman. I am very impressed with how well kept the whole facility is and the level of care that is provided.”

To support Craig in his efforts visit www.justgiving.com/craig-manson.

Another Erskine supporter encouraging runners to sign up to the Great Scottish Run, on September 6th, is Rhona Ostman a volunteer at the Erskine Glasgow Home.

Rhona, from Glasgow’s West End, said: “The Erskine Glasgow Home is a cause very close to my heart and as I’m starting an Occupational Health course this year I wanted to get some experience volunteering, so I signed up to volunteer at Anniesland. It’s fulfilling to give something positive back even if it’s a cup of tea or going out to the garden. You realise how important it is to support a cause as worthwhile as Erskine, so I would encourage others to take part in the Great Scottish Run for Erskine as every little bit counts towards caring for our veterans.”

Police Officers To Trot Their Way To Success For Erskine

A team of Police officers are swapping their beat for bicycles in a bid to raise money for Scotland’s veterans.

Known as the Pigs on Bikes, the group will cycle approximately 65 miles from Edinburgh city centre, along the Forth & Clyde canal to the High Court in Glasgow on the 5th September. All money raised from their efforts will be split between Erskine and The Moira Fund.

Since forming in 1999, the team from North Lanarkshire Division and from the Courts Branch, have raised thousands of pounds for various charities including the Special Care Unit of Bellshill Maternity Hospital, Scottish Spina Bifida Association, Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and the Craighalbert Centre.

This time the officers from Lanarkshire – Inspector Iain Ross, Sergeants David Callander and Charlie Jarvis and Constables Alan Thompson, Alistair Carson, Dougie Thomson, John Houlihan, Dougie McFadzean, Gillian Monroe and Dougie Wotherspoon - hope to continue their success and raise as much as they can for their nominated charities.

Sergeant Callander said: “It is never easy to choose a charity to benefit from a cycle run because quite simply there are so many worthy causes out there. Opened in 1916 Erskine has provided excellent care and support for the ex-Service community of both World Wars and numerous other conflicts and in light of the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, which feature all too frequently in the news, it seemed entirely appropriate that Erskine should be considered as a beneficiary of this year’s cycle run.”

Pentland Valley Players' Good Show For Erskine Edinburgh Home

Amateur dramatic group, the Pentland Valley Players, put the song and dance into fundraising to raise money for the Erskine Edinburgh Home.

Their latest showstopper called ‘The Worst Day of My Life’ by Alan Richardson raised an impressive £1,200 throughout its three-night run at the Gibson Craig Halls, Currie, in June.

Since 2002 the group has raised over £10,000 for charities including Sick Kids, CHAS, Alzheimer's Scotland, Simpsons Neonatal Unit, Marie Curie Hospice and The Scottish Burned Children's Club. This year they choose the Erskine Edinburgh Home in Gilmerton, which is due to open its new expansion this month, as their chosen charity.

Sandra Cranford of the Pentland Valley Players said: “The Pentland Valley Players always try to support a local charity and this time around, we've chosen the Erskine Edinburgh Home, close to our hearts for a number of reasons. It was the most popular choice we have had and we have supported a number of charities over the years and raised in excess of £10,000. After this show we have reached nearly £12,000 for charities. We always like to support something locally and we are delighted it was Erskine.”

John Fyfe, Edinburgh fundraiser, added: “It was marvellous to see the amount of effort put in by an amateur group to raise such an amazing amount over such a short period of time. Donations such as this allow Erskine and its five care homes across Scotland to provide the highest standard of care to our veterans. The £1,200 raised will go a long way towards helping the Erskine Edinburgh Home give its ex-Service men and women the care they so richly deserve.”

Chernobyl Children Raise Money For Erskine

A group of 20 Belarusian children aged 9 to 16 who live in areas contaminated by nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station disaster of 26th April 1986 are to put on their walking boots to raise money for the veterans’ charity Erskine.

The children, who are spending a month in Scotland to improve their health and to enjoy a once in a lifetime holiday, are hoping to raise awareness of both Erskine and Chernobyl Children Lifeline (CCLL). The Inverness Link of CCLL has been organising these visits since 1998.

The children have chosen to complete a sponsored walk around Loch Morlich, near Aviemore, on Tuesday July 28th. The event ties in with a number of other activities during their month-long stay, which includes visits to Edinburgh Castle and Dynamic Earth.

Catherine Cowie, Erskine’s Area North Co-ordinator, said: “Erskine is delighted that the children staying with the CCLL (Inverness Link) are taking part in this sponsored walk in aid of our veterans. Every penny raised for our charity goes a long way towards providing the care our ex-Service men and women so richly deserve.”

Dennis Hopkins, CCLL (Inverness Link) Chairman, said: “For many years The Army in Scotland has been extremely supportive of our children and charity and this is greatly appreciated by all of us. The Army has provided accommodation and a wealth of new experiences to our young guests, who take back to Belarus fond memories of our Forces. We are delighted to show our appreciation for all that our Forces do by donating the proceeds of the children’s sponsored walk to Erskine.”

Scott said: “Just before a cold January football match we were having the usual pub chat and decided to hike the West Highland Way for charity. But unlike many other pub chats, this one materialised. We chose Erskine due to the current situation in the Middle East and really appreciate what the troops are doing over there for all of us back home – especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It was also appropriate as we had relatives cared for by Erskine after the First World War.”

The four friends are expected to complete their Milngavie to Bearsden challenge in five days.

Louis Claes and his son, also called Louis, took four days to complete the 70-mile long challenge in May raising £900 for the Gilmerton care home.

For 17 years Louis Snr served with the then 1st Battalion Royal Highland Fusiliers including operations in Northern Ireland. He now works as a PC for Lothian and Borders Police ‘O’ Division.

The long-distance route is one of the newest for hikers covering the north-west of Scotland between Lochinver and Toungue.

John Fyfe, Erskine’s Edinburgh fundraiser, said: “This was a fantastic family effort which will help the Erskine Edinburgh Home and its residents tremendously.”

Big Long Chippy Run

One hundred and eighty seven miles is a long way to go for a good fish supper - especially if you are swimming, cycling and running.

But according to the members of Glasgow Triathlon Club who did just that last weekend to raise money for Erskine and two other charities, the chips taste all the better for the effort.

Around 40 members of the club took part in a unique charity event called the Big Long Chippie Run Triathlon. The three-day challenge took them from the west coast of Scotland to the east coast village of Anstruther, aptly the home of Scotland’s famous Anstruther Fish Bar.

Starting at 6am on Friday (26th July), the Big Long Chippie Run Triathlon set off from Helensburgh for an eight-mile cycle to Balloch. For the next 11 hours, a relay of swimmers headed north along the spectacular 22-mile length of Loch Lomond.

After a night at Bienglas Campsite, Inverarnan, the triathletes then cycled the 96 miles from Ardlui to Kinross.

The final leg on the Sunday included 40 miles of cycling and 11 miles of running. Participants were joined by many friends and relatives for the final one mile run into Anstruther on Sunday. And there were cheers and clapping from bystanders in the popular coastal village as the Big Long Chippy Run Triathlon finally came to a finish outside the door of Scotland’s best chip shop.

It was then over to the staff at award-winning Anstruther Fish bar to fry up enough fish and chips to feed the exhausted triathletes.

Mini-bus and van support for the event was provided by Mitchells Hire Drive at Dumbarton.

Yesterday, Glasgow Triathlon Club president David Wilson said: “Some people will go a long way for a good fish supper and our club is no exception. Although this was a tough event we all had a fantastically enjoyable time. We are also delighted to have raised more than £1500 for our nominated charities.”

The club’s secretary Stewart Reid added: “When we thought up this event as part of the club’s 10th anniversary celebrations we has no idea how much fun it would be – nor how good the chips would taste at the end. This has been an incredibly special weekend and one that many people will treasure for years to come.”

Money raised from the Big Long Chippie Run Triathlon will be split equally among Erskine, Loch Lomond Rescue Boat (LLRB) and The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.

Andy On Form Again For Erskine

A long-standing supporter of Erskine has come up trumps again for his favourite charity!

Andy Cumming, from Paisley, has raised thousands of pounds, over a number of years for the veterans’ charity trying something different every time.

Last year he organised a five-a-side football tournament and this year a raffle, which included a football shirt signed by the current Rangers team raised £600.

Andy managed to increase his fundraising efforts after his employers Royal Bank of Scotland gave a further £500 through its Community Cash Back Scheme, which recognises their employee’s charitable commitments and helps to support the charities they are involved with.

Erskine Glasgow's Marathon Success

A team of care staff who provide first-class care to Glasgow’s war veterans have raised £1,831 after completing the Edinburgh Marathon.

The runners from the Erskine Glasgow Home in Anniesland, which opened in February 2008, raised the cash after running as the Erskine Glasgow Snails relay team on May 31st.

Care assistant Mark Ewing, from Dumbarton, Senior Care Assistant Judith McLay, from Kirkintilloch; Senior Care Assistant John Barrett, from Drumchapel, and Ally Johnston, 17, from Rothesay set out to raise £1,000 for the home by pounding the streets of Scotland’s capital.

But they were overjoyed to raise nearly double their initial target by running the Hairy Haggis Team Relay.

Gordon Johnston, Erskine Glasgow Home manager, said: "Given that it was one of the hottest days of the year, and that there was a lack of available water at some stages of the course, the team did remarkably well to complete the marathon without any mishaps; the only ailments being sore legs and sunburn! Everyone at Erskine Glasgow is really proud of Judith, John, Ally and Mark. We hope to make this an annual event!"

The Bridge of Don Academy has been putting their fundraising hats on again for Erskine.

The 5th and 6th year pupils managed to raise £744.45 for the veterans’ charity by holding a Heroes and Villains themed dress down day and a quiz.

Recently Erskine Area Co-ordinator North, Catherine Cowie, visited the school to receive the cheque from pupils.

She said: “This is a fantastic donation from the Bridge of Don Academy, it is wonderful that they have chosen Erskine as the charity to benefit from their fundraising activities yet again. Donations such as this allow Erskine to continue to provide unrivalled medical and nursing care to veterans of all ages across Scotland. Their efforts are extremely welcomed.”

Supporters Turn Out For Royal Scots Lunch

Around 90 friends of Erskine turned out to support the veterans’ charity Edinburgh Appeal at its recent Royal Scots Club lunch.

The lunches, which are held three times a year, are organised by Jacobina and Ernie Woodburn who are staunch supporters of Erskine.

Guest of honour for the occasion on June 9th was Major General Euan Loudon CBE, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

As part of the lunch Major General Loudon gifted a VIP invitation for two to his box at the Military Tattoo as part of our raffle.

The event was a huge success for the Erskine Edinburgh Home, Gilmerton, raising £809 towards its 48-bed expansion which is due to open in early autumn.

John Fyfe, Erskine’s Edinburgh fundraiser, said: “It is encouraging to see so many supporters of Erskine turn out to raise much needed funds for our Edinburgh home. These lunches form an important part of raising awareness of the care Erskine provides for veterans in Edinburgh and the East of Scotland area. Many thanks must be given to Major General Loudon CBE for attending and for his very poignant speech which was very well delivered and set the tone for the whole event.”

On 20/21 June 2009, Chris will challenge himself to run the West Highland Way, aiming to cross 96 miles of rough and uneven terrain in under 30 hours.

NB65 Cycle Challenge

Thursday 4th June saw a group of cyclists, Faslane submariners and civilians, departing from The Erskine Home, Bishopton, one of the five Erskine homes caring for Scottish veterans of all ages.

The cyclists were departing for Normandy where they were to be joined by members of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards to begin an arduous cycle journey, commencing at 7.25 am on 6th June, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day.
Many of the veterans who were present along with families, friends and staff, to hear Colonel Martin Gibson, CEO of Erskine lead the resounding send off to the cyclists had personally experienced the D Day landings.

With a piper playing heart stirring music and the flag being dropped by Chris Moon, a man regarded as a hero of present times, the send off was not only fitting to the men taking on this difficult challenge but also very poignant.
The cyclists’ journey will end at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, after a journey of almost 800 miles.

The venture, as well as commemorating the 65th anniversary of D-Day and the liberation of Western Europe, is an attempt to raise £65,000 for three specially chosen charities.

The first of these charities, Erskine and Combat Stress, represent not only the service but sacrifice of servicemen and women past and present and the third, CCLASP, represents today’s younger generation.

The cycling fund raisers are hoping that the public will support them and these three important charities by sponsoring them at www.NB65.co.uk.

Colonel Martin Gibson said: "Our D Day veterans can never be repaid for the sacrifices made and courage shown on that historical day in June 65 years ago. We, at Erskine, commend this stalwart group of cyclists in their bid to honour and recognise this momentous day and wish them very best of luck on their long journey."

Forth Coxswain Is Full Steam Ahead For Erskine Edinburgh Home

A coxswain for the Forth Pilots Association swapped his pilot boat for hiking boots recently to raise money for the Erskine Edinburgh Home.

Tom Smith, from Loanhead, trekked 45 miles from Tyndrum to Fort William last month in a bid to raise awareness and money for the veterans’ charity’s home in Gilmerton.

Tom, who previously served with the Sea Company 15 Para, took four days to complete his challenge after battling torrential rain and wind.

But his efforts paid off when he recently handed over a cheque for £860 towards the Erskine Edinburgh Home expansion which is due to open in late summer. The money was made up of sponsorship from friends, family, colleagues and employers the Forth Pilots Association, based in Granton.

Tom said: "I was going to be doing the walk anyway but because I enjoyed it when I completed it last time I thought why not make some money for charity out of it. I also live in Loanhead and the Erskine Edinburgh Home is just around the corner. With that and my son having served with the Royal Scots, the Erskine Edinburgh Home expansion was the perfect choice to raise money for."

John Fyfe, Edinburgh Fundraiser, said: "I think it is a marvellous example of someone who, not only fundraising for their own personal reasons, but involving their colleagues and their employer to greatly increase the amount raised in support of a fantastic cause which helps veterans of all ages across Scotland, including ex-Service men and women from Edinburgh and the Lothians."

Walk A Walk For Erskine

The Veterans Charity Erskine is fast approaching one of the most important weeks in its calendar; Erskine Week.

From 1st to 8th June friends and supporters of Erskine will be pulling out all the stops to make Erskine Week 2009 a record breaking fundraiser.

Erskine is hoping that its many supporters will follow in the footsteps of brothers Grant and Tam Smith in raising funds for Erskine.

Walking the West Highland Way, Scotland's first official long distance route linking Milngavie to Fort William covering the 95 miles, was the brothers' choice of fund raising event for Erskine.

Having braved the elements of the mercurial April weather, the dense woodland, and great big hills, not to mention to dreaded midge they were delighted to find that people dug deep into their pockets and sponsored them very generously, so far to the tune of £1,300.

Grant and Tam, both veterans themselves, know how important the care Erskine provides is.

Grant said "It was and is always a privilege and honour to do something that will benefit Erskine. As long as there is war in this world there will always be a need for Erskine".

No matter how big or small your chosen event is every penny makes a difference to the quality of life for over 1,370 veterans cared for by Erskine each year. So please help make a difference.

Our Erskine Bridge Walk on Monday 1st June might not be as arduous as the West Highland Way, at just over 2 miles there and back, but already we have local schools and many individual walkers registered for what we hope will be a fun packed day.
