The Thick Red Line

The Thick Red Line, one story of the British Army, by Ian Patterson.

This collection of stories was inspired by Ian’s son John who spent 17 years in the Royal Engineers.  The humorous anecdotes told to Ian were based on many of John’s own personal experiences and those of his comrade-in-arms.

The stories in this book contain a certain amount of “black humour” so prevalent amongst all the services, whether it be police or military.  This,  being a necessary part of the way in which ordinary people deal with the exceptional circumstances they find themselves in,  almost on a daily basis.

The Thick Red Line can be purchased for £8.00 by e mailing susan.hamilton@erskine.org.uk .  Postage and Packing charges apply.

Gray Laidlaw Book

Proving the adage that you’re never too old, a retired businessman from Paisley has  become a first-time author at the age of eighty-eight.   Gray Laidlaw completed his novel, Past But Very Present, while a resident in the Erskine Home for ex-Service men and women.

Proceeds from the sale of his self-published novel, which is partly set in modern-day Scotland and France and partly during World War II, are going to the Erskine Home, in gratitude for the excellent care he receives from the charity.

The Story of Erskine

Care for their "hero sons"

"Do You Sleep With That Leg On?" This fascinating book was described by The Prince of Wales, Patron of Erskine in his Foreword as a "moving and heart-warming" story. It was written by Harry Diamond, a long-time member of the Erskine Executive Committee.

The book charts the history of Erskine from the moment of its inception in 1916 to the completion of Erskine 2000, a series of projects costing nearly £26 million which involved construction of a new state-of-the-art Erskine Home at Bishopton and two smaller nursing homes in Erskine town and in Edinburgh.

Battle for the Roer Triangle

This book tells the story of Operation Blackcock, the code name for the British 21st Army Group's operation to clear the area of ground known as the Roer Triangle in January 1945. For months this salient had stuck out like a thorn in the allied side. This was Montgomery's successful renewal of the Allied campaign to breach the formidable German West Wall defences after the reverses of the German winter offensive. A little known bitter and vicious battle, involving two VC actions, fought in desperate winter conditions. www.operation-blackcock.com

St Valery The Impossible Odds

The gallant rearguard action which led to the capture of the 51st Highland Division at St Valery-en-Caux (two weeks after the famous evacuation of the main British army from Dunkirk) may have burned itself into the consciousness of an older generation of Scots but has never been given the recognition it deserves. This new book re-examines that fateful chain of events in 1940 and reassesses some of the myths that have grown up in the intervening years.

This book is available from all good book shops or from the publishers directly. Also available from Erskine Merchandise by calling
