Erskine remembers a Princess

Today, on what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday, Erskine recalls her visits to meet our Veterans, over the years.

On 2 October 1983, the Princess and Prince Charles visited what was then the Princess Louise Scottish Hospital for Limbless Soldiers and Sailors.

It was a wonderful occasion with crowds of veterans, families, staff and well wishers turning out to see the young royal couple.

Fast forward to June 1992.  Erskine is now the Erskine Hospital for Disabled Servicemen, it is a glorious day and Diana has arrived, this time for a solo visit, looking very Scottish in tartan coat dress.

Staff remember “Diana headed straight to the crowd. Our Veterans didn’t hold back someone shouted “Gie us a kiss Di’.  Diana in a playful way, put her hand on her cheek and said: ‘Go ahead’.  The Veterans were delighted. They were even more delighted when she joined in a session of carpet bowls.

Although the day was very warm Diana carried on kissing and hugging people, no one was left disappointed.

Her visits will never be forgotten here in Erskine and today on her birthday we remember with pride a kind, beautiful princess who took the time to put smiles on dozens of our Veterans faces.
