Alastair Bruce

Veteran, broadcaster, officer of arms in the Royal Household, and former Governor of Edinburgh Castle

Major General Alastair Bruce is a distinguished soldier, senior British Army reservist and officer of arms in the Royal Household. As Royal, Religious and National Events Commentator for Sky News, and previously with the BBC, he has guided audiences through many defining national occasions, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Royal Weddings, the 2023 Coronation, and the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II.

He is also widely known as the historical adviser to the ITV series Downton Abbey, where he made cameo appearances throughout all six series, including a speaking role as Lord Chamberlain in the 2013 Christmas Special.

His relationship with Erskine began during his five years as Governor of Edinburgh Castle, when he met Chief Executive Ian Cumming and visited the charity, forming a strong connection with its work.

Scottish veterans are our collective national treasure, and, if life turns badly, Erskine catches and lifts them up, with care, dignity and the warmth of an unending highland welcome. After serving as a Scottish soldier for 45 years, and knowing the history of Scotland’s martial tradition, I look forward to raising awareness of the mission of Erskine Veterans Charity, wherever it helps the staff and residents.
