Charlie, D-Day Royal Navy Veteran and Erskine Resident

At just 18 years old, Charlie found himself in the English Channel on the eve of D-Day. Serving aboard minesweeper MMS 291, his role was to clear a safe route for US assault craft heading towards Omaha Beach, where hidden mines threatened to destroy ships instantly. In his diary on 6 June 1944, Charlie described a sky lit up by bombs and shell bursts, whilst planes passed overhead.

More than 80 years after D-Day, Charlie continues to share his story to ensure the service and sacrifice of Veterans are never forgotten.

As the number of Veterans from my generation grows smaller each year, I hope our stories will be remembered.

Stand with Veterans this Remembrance

With the right support, Veterans today can continue to live with dignity, connection and the quality of life they deserve.

Life after service can bring new challenges for many Veterans. Poor health, reduced mobility and loneliness can make everyday life difficult, leaving some Veterans facing these challenges alone. This Remembrance, a donation to Erskine can help ensure Veterans receive the care, companionship and support they need after service.

How your donation can help

  • £10 could give Erskine Veterans a special Christmas dinner.
  • £25 could help give a gift to Veterans on Christmas Day.
  • £100 could go towards Christmas parties in each of our Homes and Activities Centres for Veterans and their loved ones.

More Veterans than ever are now turning to Erskine for support. With your help, we can offer safety, companionship and hope when they need it most.
