Dunkirk: The Forgotten Heroes

When the Channel 4 documentary: “Dunkirk: The Forgotten Heroes” told the story of the 51st Highland Division, which was stranded in Saint Valery in June 1940, after the evacuation at Dunkirk, the programme was greatly received by viewers.

The only surviving Division members shared their experiences of being the last part of the British Expeditionary Force on the front line. Erskine Veteran Harry Bayne who served with the Black Watch 1st Battalion and Donald Smith who served with the Seaforth Highlanders, both recounted their personal experiences.

Sadly Harry passed in 2019 and Donald the last surviving Veteran from the documentary only recently.

Donald’s family has asked that donations in his memory be made to Erskine as while Donald was not in Erskine’s care the charity works hard to make life easier for thousands of veterans.  https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/51hd
