Erskine Activity Centre Members Visit Lady Haig Factory
On Thursday 18th September, sixteen members of the Erskine Veterans Activity Centre North (EVACN) in Forres enjoyed a special visit to Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory in Edinburgh.
The trip gave veterans the chance to see first-hand how the iconic poppies and wreaths, which hold such meaning for the Armed Forces community and beyond, are carefully made. Members were warmly welcomed by the factory team, many of whom are veterans themselves, and were given a fascinating insight into the history and significance of the poppy in Scotland.
The day was more than just a factory tour – it was an opportunity for friendship, reflection, and connection. For many members, visiting Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembrance and the role veterans continue to play in shaping and supporting their communities.
EVACN member Steve Gray commented: ‘Speaking for nearly everyone who was there, it was a fantastic experience and the Veterans who gave us the royal tour were so informative and we all learned so much about the history of the poppy and why you can tell the difference between the Scottish poppy and the English one!
Another member Garry Burgess said: “The visit was fantastic – both interesting and inspiring. To see equipment still in use after more than 100 years was remarkable, and the trip was certainly well worth it.”
The Erskine Veterans Activity Centre in Forres provides a vital hub for veterans in the north of Scotland, offering a space to connect, take part in activities, and support each other. Visits like this are part of the centre’s commitment to enriching members’ lives through meaningful experiences and shared heritage.
