A former RAF Regiment Gunner is set to take on one of mountaineering’s most formidable challenges, scaling Mount Manaslu in the Nepalese Himalayas, in support of Scotland’s leading veterans charity, Erskine.

Danny Pawson, 44, will attempt the 8,163-metre peak, one of just 14 mountains in the world exceeding 8,000 metres, in what climbers call the ‘Death Zone’. Known for its unforgiving terrain and volatile conditions, Manaslu has frequently been ranked among the most dangerous climbs on Earth and will take 31-days to conquer.
A veteran of the 2003 Iraq War, Danny joined the RAF at 17 and was primarily based at RAF Lossiemouth with 51 Squadron. He undertook multiple operational tours across Iraq and Kuwait before transitioning to civilian life after five years’ service.
Speaking ahead of the expedition, Danny said: “This challenge has been a long time in the making. The military instilled in me a mindset of resilience and determination, and I have carried that into everything I have done since leaving service. Climbing Manaslu is about pushing myself to the absolute limit, but more importantly it is about recognising the sacrifices made by the wider veterans community.
“Erskine plays a vital role in supporting veterans and their families across Scotland. I have seen first-hand the importance of that support network, and this is my way of giving something meaningful back. If taking on one of the toughest mountains in the world helps raise awareness and funds for that work, then every step will be worth it.”
The expedition represents a significant personal commitment. With total costs estimated at £20,000, Danny has already invested £15,000 of his own funds to cover specialist equipment and initial logistics. He is now seeking sponsorship support, while continuing to underwrite the challenge himself if required.
Wing Commander Ian Cumming MBE, Chief Executive of Erskine, said: “Danny’s attempt on Mount Manaslu is an exceptional undertaking that speaks volumes about his character and his continued commitment to the Armed Forces community. Challenges of this scale demand extraordinary courage, preparation and resolve, and we are immensely proud that he has chosen to support Erskine.
“Every pound raised through Danny’s climb will directly support veterans and their families across Scotland, helping us provide high-quality care, housing, and community services to those who have served. At a time when demand for our support continues to grow, initiatives like this are not only inspiring, they are essential to ensuring we can continue to be there for those who need us most.”
