Huge congratulations and thank you to Erskine supporters Paul and Lorraine Power for completing their Rust to Rome challenge, raising over £1,000 for the Erskine Veterans Activity Centre North in Forres.
The couple set off in June on their intrepid 4,500 mile round trip from South Queensferry to Rome in their 20-year-old Volvo C5. Their adventure was part of an “old banger rally” along with 46 other vehicles, including a 42 seater bus!
The incredible drive saw them wind through the narrow streets of Assisi, letting loose on the German Autobahn, climbing the mountains of the Austrian Alps and Dolomites. There was even time for a stop in Venice before reaching the iconic Colosseum in Rome.
Paul, who served in the Queen’s Own Highlanders, compared the rally to his time in the Services.
“Everyone on Rust to Rome looks after one another. It reminded me of being in the Army. If you break down, someone will help. No-one is left behind. One of the most memorable parts was ending the trip at the Colosseum in Rome. Everyone was together, enjoying the moment of conquering 2,500 miles. But the real highlight was the people on the voyage, the atmosphere and the camaraderie!”
Their trusty Volvo has now completed three challenges to Rome and back. But it’s not the only one that has been on a long journey; Monday 1st September also marks Paul and Lorraine’s 35th wedding anniversary. They met on a night out in Nairn when Paul was serving in the Army and based at nearby Fort George. From all at Erskine, happy anniversary and thank you for your incredible support.
