Erskine Veterans Charity is absolutely delighted to welcome the quintessential Major General Alastair Bruce of Crionaich OBE VR DL, former Governor of Edinburgh Castle, as its newest Ambassador.

A distinguished soldier, senior British Army reservist and officer of arms in the Royal Household, Major General Alastair Bruce is also one of the nation’s most familiar and trusted voices at moments of historic importance. As Royal, Religious and National Events Commentator for Sky News, and previously with BBC, he has guided audiences through many defining national occasions, from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Royal Weddings to the 2023 Coronation, as well as the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Queen Elizabeth II.
He is also widely known as the historical adviser to the popular ITV series Downton Abbey, where he made cameo appearances throughout all six series, including a speaking role as Lord Chamberlain in the 2013 Christmas Special.
It was during his five plus years as Governor of Edinburgh Castle that his relationship with Erskine truly blossomed. After meeting Chief Executive Ian Cumming and visiting the charity, a strong bond was formed. Erskine was later honoured to host the 21-Gun Royal Salute to mark the ascension of King Charles III, which was a very special occasion for the entire Erskine Veteran Family. His Majesty has been Patron of Erskine for many years and a warmly welcomed visitor to its care homes.
Ian Cumming said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Major General Alastair Bruce as the latest Ambassador for Erskine Veterans Charity. His longstanding commitment to honouring military service, along with his deep understanding of our armed forces community, makes him a natural champion for our work. Everyone within our Veteran Family who has met Major General Bruce has been struck by his warmth, insight and genuine interest in our evolving care, accommodation, and community services. We look forward to working closely with him as we continue to expand our support for Veterans across Scotland.”
Major General Bruce added: “Scottish veterans are our collective ‘national treasure’, and, if life turns badly, Erskine catches and lifts them up, with care, dignity and the warmth of an unending highland welcome.
After serving as a Scottish soldier for 45 years, and knowing the history of Scotland’s martial tradition, I look forward to raising awareness of the mission of Erskine Veterans Charity, wherever it helps the staff and residents.
We all need to promote Erskine, in Scotland and across our worldwide diaspora: because it’s a gripping story and as much for us to be proud of as the victories our servicemen and women have won, throughout our national story, since Bannockburn.”
His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Erskine. With his unwavering dedication to service, Major General Alastair Bruce will be a compelling and passionate champion for Erskine.
